About Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter and its properties and components at the molecular level. It is basically study of reactions in for of separation or combination in respect of another matter or energy. It is the study of atoms their reactions forming molecules and its study.

At the core level the study is divided in two parts. The study of hydrocarbons is referred as Organic Chemistry whereas the study of other metals and gases which does not comprise of the element Carbon is called as Inorganic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry is called as Chemistry of Life” because all of the molecules that make up living tissue have carbon as part of their makeup.

What is it all about?

‘By Definition Chemistry is the branch of science concerned with the substances of which matter is composed, the investigation of their properties and reactions, and the use of such reactions to form new substances.

As it study matter at the core level it often overlaps with other branch of science namely Physics Biology and Radiology. Chemistry has 5 sub disciples.

  • Analytical Chemistry:  It is the study of composition of matter by separating, identifying and quantifying the chemicals in the matter.

  • Organic Chemistry: It is the study of chemicals containing carbon. It is widely studied as most of the chemicals found in all living organisms are based on carbon.

  • Inorganic Chemistry: It is the study of chemicals that do not contain carbon in general.

  • Physical Chemistry: It is the study of the macroscopic properties, chemical reactions, and energy transfer at the molecular level.

  • Biochemistry: It is the study of Chemical and cellular changes that occur in living organisms.


A Bachelor’s Program in Chemistry is of minimum 3 years duration and the eligibility for this program is 10+2 with minimum 50% marks in Chemistry as subject. It can only be done by students of science stream.

Aspirants for MS in Chemistry must clear their B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry or equivalent degree. They can further pursue Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Chemistry after the successful completion of this course.



After completion of B.Sc. in Chemistry one can choose to either garner some work experience by looking out for jobs in various fields, or choose to pursue higher education from Universities in India or abroad. There are various colleges and universities in USA, China, Japan, and Germany which one can choose to study from.  

There are various job opportunities available for both graduates and undergraduates. Apart from the jobs, one can also choose to do Ph.D. in area of choice by doing research. After PhD one can also opt for Post Doctorate which is usually to give you a lifelong experience of knowledge and adventure.

Apart from the conventional jobs one can choose to work as a forensic scientist or R&D in food sector. There are upcoming field for Chemistry graduates.
