About Dentistry

Dentistry is a division of medicine that consists of the study, prevention, diagnosis, treatment of diseases, disorders, conditions of the oral cavity commonly in the dentition region. But it can also be in the oral mucosa and of the adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area. Though primarily associated with teeth among the common public, the field of dentistry or dental medicine is not limited to teeth but includes other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular joint and other supporting, muscular, nervous, vascular, lymphatic, and anatomical structures. Dental checkups and treatments are carried out by professionals known as dentists who have received the required medical training and also passed exams that license them to practice the profession. They are normally assisted by a dental team composed of dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental assistants and dental therapists. Aspiring dentists classically completed a bachelor’s degree before entering dental school. Dentistry is often also understood to include the now largely obsolete medical specialty of stomatology (the study of the mouth and its disorders and diseases) for which reason the two terms are used interchangeably in definite regions.

Dental treatments are carried out by a dental team which regularly consists of a dentist and dental auxiliaries which comprise dental assistants, dental technicians, dental hygienists as well as dental therapists. Most dentists either work in private practices, primary care, dental hospitals or secondary care institutions like prisons, armed forces bases, etc. the different areas or types of denstistry are Dental Public Health, dontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. Dentists are kinds of doctors who specialize in oral health, whose responsibilities include Promoting oral health and promote disease prevention  by creating treatment plans to maintain or restore the oral health of their patients. A degree in Dentistry is highly demanding but very rewarding as well. Generally, most people who study Dentistry go on to become dental professionals and there is also a global high demand for people in this profession. However, studying Dentistry does not mean one has to go into direct medical practice – studying such a demanding course prepares one for work in almost any industry or profession.

Dentistry can be taught in India but better scopes of study and field exposure can happen abroad. By studying abroad a person will get more experience of working for dentistry along with studying, thus making it a safer sector. Studying abroad also helps students in becoming more social, learning new cultures and adapting in every situation which is far away from that of home. A student can get a better perspective about the world by staying in a land far away from his own.  Starting from school level, certain subjects like Biology, Chemistry and Physics are important to have studied in order to apply for dentistry courses. Undergraduate courses for dentistry have a time period of completion that range from 3 years to 5 years. Some common courses on which a Bachelor’s degree is available are of Dentistry (Honours) The University of Dental Technology by Cardiff Metropolitan University and Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences by University of Dundee for a period of 3 years; Oral Health Sciences by The University of Adelaide for a period of 5 years. Usually the courses of graduation aren’t too varied in dentistry.

Post-graduation is generally done in a stream which happens to be a kind of specialization on the undergraduate course. Some popular Master's degree course of dentistry are clinical dentistry, dental medicine, dental health and primary health, forensic odontology, odontology, special care dentistry, orthodontics, health and veterinary dentistry, endodontics, etc.

Along with specializations, a dentist can be of many types as well, they commonly are General Dentis, Endodontist, Orthodontist, Pediatric Dentist or Pedodontists, Oral and Maxillofacial, Surgeon, Periodontist, Prosthodontist and Oral Pathologist. A general dentist is known as our primary dental care provider, n endodontist is a dental specialist that cares for the nerve and pulpof a patient’s tooth, an orthodontist is a dentist that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental problems that affect teeth, jaw, and their structures, a pediatric dentist specializes in dental care for children, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is responsible for any type of surgeries that involve the mouth, jaw, or face, a periodontist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the soft tissues within the mouth, a prosthodontist specializes in the replacement of missing teeth or the repair of a patient’s natural teeth, and an oral pathologist is a specialist who studies the different causes of diseases that occur in the mouth and those diseases that change the jaw, lip, teeth, and cheek structures.
