About Environmental Engineering

Engineering is defined and understood to be the most prominent branch of science and technology that is involved with the design, machines, structures and every such thing that is concerned with conceptualization or an analytical or systematically driven approach. Whereas Environment, on the other hand, is basically everything a person is surrounded with or a daily life condition or situation a person, animal or any being for that matter operates in. Environmental engineering collectively can be defined as the field of engineering that talks about the approach of scientific and engineering which further lays down the stated norms for preserving the human population from the harmful effects of environmental factors; protection of environments, both local and global, from potentially unfavorable effects of natural and unnatural activities; and improvement of environmental standard.

Types of Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering can be classified into various types that are stated as followed;

  • Sustainable engineering-

Sustainable engineering as the name suggests is a concept that involves the interactions between technical, ecological, social and economic systems and even by avoidance in the shifting problems from place to place.

Sustainable means living in such a way that the natural and limited resources are not exhausted or vitiated to an extent that makes the future generation suffer.

Concepts that include life cycle thinking, industrial ecology and sustainable systems engineering are necessary elements in the education system and work place of a sustainable engineer. Sustainable engineers gain profound and vast amount of understanding in the field of industrial ecology and its holistic principles[1], efficiency of resource, effective management of risk and even sustainable consumption and production. The engineer of sustainability understands the environment and sustainability framework that is based on the corporate world and regional development. The main agenda is to work on solutions for the problems that are concerned to climate change, waste management, low carbon livings, energy futures etc.

  • Transport engineering

The main aim of a transport engineer is to plan, systematically operate and design the huge public and even private infrastructure systems that connect our physical worlds. Transport engineering is a vital branch of the civil engineering disciples that are basically impacted by roadways, bridges, transit stations, airports and sea ports and a lot more.

This field of engineering has evolved into a multidisciplinary field that spans economics, physiology, sociology etc. and the main fundamental ones being mathematics, engineering and computational engineering. The transport planning basically involves the mathematical and calculative techniques for forecasting travel demand and most importantly for the plans to be set up for accommodation for the growth in demand. Reduction of emissions and energy usage are also a part of the transport planning.

The computational transport planning uses the mathematical methods to forecast and represent and quantify the usage and evolution of the land use in different places. Travel characteristics and decisions related to travel are also a part of this planning.

  • Water engineering

Water engineering involves the interaction of water with all the ingredients of the built and natural resources. Water engineering looks after detailing of the natural systems such as rivers and the coasts, as well as technical designing infrastructure to reserve and direct the supply and usage of water.

Water engineering is concerned and connected with the needs of water in various parts of Australia[2] this is inclusive of the drinking water the water that is used and stored for agriculture and industry and even for the water for natural environment.

Flooding is one of the disasters that are a nightmare for every human being and the engineering department for water is specialized and concerned to look after the coastal water behavior, the water engineering is concerned with the water that lies underground the aquifers and deep in the soil.

Degrees offered in the department

Bachelor’s Courses

  • Environmental engineering (B.sc.)

It is a four year course, the full time course is also offered in the University of Toledo costing approximately 15,030 EUR/year

       M.Sc. - Master of Science

      Subject areas

      Coastal Engineering

This main objective of the course is targeted on the engineers or the physical scientists; our MSc Coastal Engineering amalgamates the theory that includes the waves and the tides with coastal modeling, port engineering and management. The subject is supported and directed by a team of highly educated staff in one of the largest and developed coastal engineering research groups in the United Kingdom. It s a one year and full time degree as it is a masters degree costing exactly £9,500 per year (UK/EU)

        M.sc. - Master of Science

       Subject areas

       Water Management Environmental Studies

This project is basically aimed at enumerating meaningful value to the business and profession through the attainment of creative and productive solutions and the generation of a high end profession environment.

The student who is a graduate in this very field will be capable enough for the application of techniques that analyses and resolve and decode problems that are faced by the environment. This subject will train and develop a student’s mind so meticulously that he is able to critically examine and evaluate the impact that is to be faced by the environment out of the unfavorable human activities and display knowledge of national and international environmental procedure and policy.

It is full time courses which will be completed in maximum one year of practice as it a master’s course, which will approximately cost £6,300 per year (UK/EU). It also has a 3 years part time degree for the same.

M.Sc. - Master of Science

Subject areas

Coastal / River Engineering Marine Engineering Marine Transport Operations

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM), is a course that requires two-year English taught international master's degree. All the universities that are a part of this course have binding relations with the industry of transport operations with the public works administrations and even with the research and education centres. During the following course the students get to know themselves with basic issues involved in enumerating sustainable development, environmentally accepted, legally and economically friendly solutions to various problems in the CoMEM field. This degree is specifically a 2 year full time degree which would approximately cost  £9,250 per year (UK/EU).

A few more degrees are as follows:

  • Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering (M.sc.)

One year full time degree would approximately cost £8,250 per year (UK/EU)

It also offers a 2 year part time degree.

  • Water and Environment Management (M.sc)

Fifteen month fulltime degree would cost around £7,390 per year (UK/EU)

One year full time degree that would approximately cost  £7,390 per year (UK/EU)

And the two tears part time degree would approximately cost around  £770 credit (UK/EU).

  • Water and Environment Engineering M.sc.
  • Its offers a 60 months distance program without attendance degree. 12 months full time degree that would approximately cost around £9,800 per year (UK/EU).

  • Water: Science and Governance M.sc.

One year degree course costs around £9,900 per year (UK/EU).

The two year part time degree course would come up to around: £4,950 per year (UK/EU)

Top Universities offering these courses[3]

University of Toledo, United states offers the Environmental Engineering course that is the undergraduate four year course.

Newport University offers the four year Environment studies course.

Environmental Engineering is also offered by the Louisiana State University, United States

B.sc Environmental Engineering is available in the Gannon University , United States.

Jobs and future opportunities

Employment of environmental engineers is expected to grow 8 percent over the upcoming decade, comparatively equal to the other professions.

The concerns of the Government about water are main agenda and are to increase the efficiency of water use. This focus mainly differs from that of wastewater treatment, for which this profession is traditionally well known.

Most of the displayed employment growth for environmental engineers is in the core professional, analytical, scientific, and technical places.

Environmental engineers continue to be a requirement for the help of  utility companies and water treatment plants comply with federal and state government environmental regulations.

The job opportunities are as follows-

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers design and construct the processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan, analyze and test production methods and even the byproducts treatment, and direct facility of the operations.

Environmental Engineering Technicians

Environmental engineering technicians deliver the plans that environmental engineers construct. They test then operate, and, if required, modify equipments that are to be used to preserve or clear the pollution.

Environmental Scientists and Specialists

Environmental scientists and specialists use their intelligence and knowledge of the natural sciences to safeguard the environment and human health. They may clean the polluted areas, guide the policymakers and even work with industry to minimize waste.

Hydrologists

Hydrologists study the movement of water across or even through the crust of the Earth. They use their expertise to resolve issues in the areas where water is present and used.

Natural Sciences Managers

Natural sciences managers manage and supervise the work of scientists, including the chemists, physicists, and biologists. They guide activities related to research and development programs and coordinate the tasks such as analyzing, quality control and production.
