Columbia University is situated in the heart of New York City. Since it is an Ivy League institution, there is no question regarding its reputation. This MS program is managed by the Data Science Institute at Columbia. Target audience of this program is early and mid-careerists who are hoping to strengthen their job prospects or switch to data science. It is interesting to know that, the students have access to courses from all the top programs available at this institute. Usually, the course duration is 16 months, which includes 3 semesters of study as well as an internship semester.

NYU is also located in New York City and enjoys a crowning reputation in the United States. The MS program at NYU is run by the Center for Data Science. The students enjoy access to courses from a vast range of departments including AI, statistics, bio-statistics, economics, business, psychology etc. One can complete the course in 3 or 4 semesters, as per his/her choice. Curriculum includes a capstone project where students apply what they have learned to a real-world problem. Students are required to take course in Machine Learning, Computational Statistics and Inference & Representation. New York City’s Science community offers many opportunities for the students to apply their theoretical knowledge.

At Northwestern University, the interdisciplinary masters program is run by Medill (journalism), Kellogg (management), and McCormick (engineering) schools along with industry professionals of Chicago. It has a small batch size of just 35 students.  This is a big advantage in terms of learning and interactions during the program. Student will get to learn important aspects of analytics: Statistics, databases, programming and optimization after completing the course. The curriculum is of 14 courses, 18-month industry practicum and 1 capstone project. The coursework gives good industrial exposure with activities like workshops, tech talks are conducted. Students get much exposure as practicum and capstone projects are industry sponsored.

This program of MS Analytics is managed in collaboration by the College of Engineering, Business and Computing at GaTech. This course is a 1 year program and comprises of fall, spring and summer semesters. Under practical training, this program is a coursework based into 2 capstone projects fixed in the summer semester or an internship, depending on the approval of the faculty. The program is designed to provide student knowledge on three options: Analytics Tools, Business Analytics and Computational Data Analytics. Each of the above covers statistics, operational research and computing courses. The number of courses in each of these options differs.

   MS in Business Analytics, Michigan State University

This university is ranked in the list of top 10 by the Nation by The Financial Engineer Times for 2017. MS in Business Analytics at Michigan State University is a 1 year program which begins in the spring semester and runs till summer and fall with the graduation fixed in December. The course prepares the students for the role of data scientist in various industries such as consulting, consumer products, automotive, financial services and retail. In addition to capstone project of a 10-12 week internship, the summer semester has workload of only 2 courses. Students do capstone projects in collaboration with an industry partner.

  MS in Computational Data Science, Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a shining gem among the topmost universities for research in computer science. The university’s CS department also manages few specialized masters programs which focus higher tuition fee, one core domain and offers no assistance. MSCDS is one similar which spans over 16 months covering 3 semesters of study along with an internship semester. The program is based on Machine Learning and is more of mathematical nature.
