The Punjab Technical University was originally established on 16th January 1997, along with a few institutions comprising of 9 engineering colleges and five management colleges.

Taking the present into consideration, the institution covers its administration over 280 colleges, among which 102 are engineering colleges, 134 are management colleges, 30 are pharmacy colleges, 7 are architecture colleges, and 7 are Hotel Management and Catering Technology(HMCT) colleges.

The University helps in providing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in almost all the technical fields. The UniversityUniversity packs land area of about 78 acres and comes with about 20 campuses throughout the State of Punjab.

As the UniversityUniversity comes with about 20 campuses and about 2000 learning centers, which are situated all across the country, the University altogether helps in providing quality education to more than 3 lac students from our country and about 42 foreign countries. Recently in 2015, former Prime Minister, late Inder Kumar Gujral, renamed the University from Punjab Technical University to I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University.

This decision was mainly taken into effect for the overall development and prosperity of the students of Punjab.

Academics

For the undergraduate curriculum, admission for the Btech program in the UniversityUniversity is made through the Joint Entrance examination of Punjab.

Additionally, I.K. Punjab Technical University is ranked 54 among University by National Institutional Ranking Framework(NIRF) in the year 2016.

It is also ranked 96 among all the engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in the year 2019.

Research Programme

The I.K Punjab Technical University has made very good progress in the field of research over the past few years. As of today, UniversityUniversity offers a Ph.D. in 21 disciplines, which comes with many sub-specializations as well. Additionally, the total number of students enrolled in the Ph.D. program is more than 1500.

Library Facility

As from the data, it is known that the I.K. Punjab Technical University has about 8800 reference books, about 1000 complimentary books, and also comes with more than 1000 thesis papers as well.

Achievements

Altogether the University is ranked 3rd in its own State, 54 among Universities in India, 33 in research and development by all India Ranking framework under Ministry of Human Resource and Development(MHRD).

The I.K. Punjab Technical University also helps in providing and organizing Workshops and Seminars.

The UniversityUniversity also has various tie-ups with other national institutes like Thompson River University-Canada, Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Renewable Energy-Punjab, to name a few.

I.K. Punjab Technical University also won the award for the best technical UniversityUniversity for the year 2013 by the Indian Society for Technical Education(ISTE).

The UniversityUniversity has 121 AICTE and 65 UGC institutes affiliated with it. The Institue also has supervision of 30+ bachelor courses in Engineering, 20+ in non-AICTE, and UGC courses.
