The University of Calgary, situated in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is one of the best public research universities in Canada. Founded in 1908, the University offers 14 faculties, over 85 research institutes, and centers and 55 departments.

The faculties comprise of Cumming School of Medicine, Schulich School of Engineering, Arts, Environmental Design, Graduate Studies, Kinesiology, Law, Nursing, Science, Social Work, Haskayne School of Business, Veterinary Medicine and Werklund School of Education.

The University of Calgary is a research-intensive university. Being in association with U15, the University is considered as Canada’s top research university. It offers around 250 programs granting bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. degrees. More than $360.5 million revenue has been sponsored by the University of Research, which exceeds the total revenue by a huge amount. 

The University, which has four campuses, is home to approximately 5000 foreign students. The Primary campus of the University is situated in the northwest quadrant of the city.

In 2016, the campus finished repurposing and renovating the Canadian Natural Resources Limited Engineering Complex situated within the Schulich School of Engineering. In 2017, the campus started to rehabilitate the MacKimmie Complex. The University of Calgary also chose to open a medical school in the late 1960s, and the building came to be known as Health Sciences building. 

Facilities and Amenities

The University is not just an academic campus, but also, home to the MacEwan Ballroom, which is also a concert hall with a capacity of around 1000 people. The ballroom is like a multi-purpose hall as it is used for conferences, dinners, and political debates, including the 2006 Alberta PC leadership debate.

In addition to this, the campus has a theatre and concert hall, Rozsa Centre, which hosts wind ensembles, choirs, and other fine arts. It also hosts dramas and dances and has seating more around 500 people.

The University campus also covers the McMahon Stadium, which is home to the Dinos Football Team and the Calgary Stampeders. The university campus also consists of the Jack Simpson Gymnasium, which has three gymnasiums and many bleachers to host around 2700 people.

Some of the other sports facilities available on campus are fitness studio, Aquatic Centre, dance studio, climbing walls, fitness and lifestyle center, and a weight room.

Newspaper:

The University publishes two main newspapers of its own: UToday and The Gauntlet. Created in September 2008, UToday is the online source for news about the University of Calgary, published by the department of University Relations in collaboration with the University’s 14 faculties.

The daily newspaper, except for weekends, reports on research discoveries at the university, major events and milestones, campus happenings and personalities, and opportunities to get involved in learning or activities.

The Gauntlet is the University’s monthly magazine that covers the campus and the Calgary Community. It was initially launched as a newspaper but later transited into a monthly magazine in 2017. Its primary focus is undergraduates. 

Radio:

CJSW is the University’s campus radio station, broadcasting at 90.9 MHz FM. The campus radio is a member of the National Campus and Community Radio Association. The radio station is maintained and operated by four staff members and is a non-profit society. 

Television:

Established in 1983 and incorporated in 1991, NUTV is one of the oldest university-based television production societies in Canada. It is a campus-based, non-profit organization that offers opportunities to the students of the University of Calgary and its community members to explore the world of television media and its production. 

Student Life and Interests

The campus, apart from holding eight libraries spread across the country, also has a campus bar and restaurants for the students to relax with their friends and have a good time.
