Sweden Student Visa: How to get, Requirements, Fees

Sweden is one of the best places to pursue Higher Education as it has World famous Universities with a wide range of courses in multiple fields. As there are different types of Visas available for visitors to Sweden, Students who want to study in Sweden need to Apply for a Sweden Student Visa or Residential Permit Visa. Students who applied for more than 3 months long period Courses need to take Sweden Residential Permit Visa than the normal Sweden Student Visa. The application process and Documents required, terms, etc are different for Sweden Student Visa and Sweden Residential Visa. But the students from the European Nations or EU countries need not apply for Visa for Studying in Sweden.

With the help of Sweden Student Visa, Students can work or do part-time jobs while studying in Sweden. And there are also different types of Scholarships are available for students to study in Sweden Universities. And also after completion of studies students can extend their Sweden Residential  Visa for up to 6 months time span and get Employment in the companies in Sweden.  

Types of Sweden Student Visas:

There are 2 types of Sweden Students Visas are available for international students.

  • Sweden Student Visa or Type C Visa: International students who enrolled in diploma courses or short-term courses can apply for this Visa. And the period is limited to 3 months. However, these Visa are exempted for International students based on Country specifications. 
  • Residential Visa or Type D Visa:  If International students are pursuing courses at Sweden Universities more than 1-year time span need to apply for this Visa. And to get this Visa students need to pay their first installment of the tuition fee.

Student Visa Sweden Requirements

As soon as the confirmation letter arrived from the University, International students need to prepare documents and language requirements to submit at the Visa application centre. Along with the Sweden Student, Visa Application form students need to submit the documents that are asked by the Sweden Migration agency. Students need to provide all the academic certificates along with the application form. 

The following are the required documents and language requirements for students who want to apply for Sweden Students Visa.

Required Documents for Sweden Student Visa:

  • Students must show the invitation letter from the Swedish Universities or Institutes at the time of the Visa Application process.
  • They must have a valid passport with at least 3 months time period along with a minimum of 2 blank pages.
  • In addition, students need to specify the valid reason for their visit to Sweden.
  • They need to have individual Medical Travel Insurance with the amount of at least 25,80,000 INR or 30,000 Euros.
  • Moreover, students need to provide at least 2 passport size photos and the photograph on the passport should not be taken in less than 6 months.
  • In addition, Students need to Support themselves and at least they can spend 450 SEK or 3,915 INR per day. 
  • Along with these, Students need to show that they have intentions to leave the country before the Visa period Expires.
  • They need to show the return flight tickets or reservations copies at the time of the Visa application process.
  • They also need to provide the housing details or hotel reservation details if they are staying for a short time.
  • And they need to show that they already paid their first installment tuition fee for the academy.
  • And, the academic certificates of either 10th class or 12th class or Graduation( if possible) are needed.
  • Along with these, students need to submit their civil status like Married, Unmarried, etc. 

Language Requirements for Sweden Student Visa Application:

  • Most of the Swedish Universities, accept English Proficiency level exams like TOEFL, IELTS, PTE,  etc.
  • The minimum TOEFL Exams score should be 72 marks with 17 marks in the Writing segment.
  • The overall IELTS exam score should be 6.0 with 5.5 marks in each segment.
  • Along with these, the Universities also accept C1 English Advanced scores.
  • International students can also attend English-taught programs in the Universities to improve their English along with the Swedish language.

Sweden Student  Visa Success rate

The Success rate of accepting Sweden Student Visa applications with Residence permits lies between 50-60%. It means there are 50:50 Chances to get Student Visa approval for a student who wants to study in Sweden. The actual rejection rate of Sweden Student Visa applications is 40-50% in the year 2019-2020. There are various reasons that the student’s visas or residence permits are getting rejected by Sweden Migration Agency. The Sweden Migration Agency is very strict when it comes to the Residential Permit Student Visa application. 

  • Not giving proper answers to interview questions.
  • Poor communication skills.
  • Not submitting required documents.
  • Scarcity in Funds. etc are the basic reasons to reject the Sweden Student Visa application form by Sweden Migration Agency.

How to get a visa for Sweden?

Students can get Visa for Sweden either through applying for the Sweden Migration agency or through the Schengen Visa process. International Students can get Sweden Student Visa either through an Online process or through an Offline process. But the Offline process takes a lot of time when compared to the Online visa application process. And the period for the Online visa application is short. So, students from abroad who want to apply for Sweden Student Visa or Residential Visa need to gather all the documents along with English exams scores otherwise, the application process will be delayed and also the Sweden migration authority may ask for additional information about missed details.

The following are the requirements and things to remember before applying for Sweden Student Visa:

  • International Students who are applying for Universities in Sweden need to choose Full-time Courses to apply for Sweden Student Visa.
  • Along with the Travel Insurance, students are recommended to take Health Insurance if they stay less than 1 year time period.
  • After submitting the application form, students will receive an email for Visa Interview from the Sweden Migration authority.
  • However, students need to attend the Visa interview on time that is specified by the authority.
  • And the results of the interview will be sent through the mail by the Sweden Migration authority. 
  • Along with these, students need to provide financial statements or their bank account details statements as proof.

Applying for Swedish Visa

The Application process for Sweden Student Visa is easy when it comes to Online mode. If it comes to Offline mode students need to fill in the application form and submit them to their nearby Sweden Consulates or Sweden Embassy along with the documents. The Sweden Migration authority also accepts Walk-in – application forms also along with normal ones. It means students can submit their paper-based application forms to the Sweden embassy without any prior appointment. 

The following is the Application  Process for Swedish Visa.

  • Step 1: Register and download the Swedish Visa Application form. Or apply Online through 
  • Step 2: Fill in the Application form based on your stay in Sweden. International Students need to fill in Residential Permit Visa application form if they enrolled for more than 3 months of academic courses.
  • Step 3: Confirm the offer letter from Sweden Universities before applying for the Sweden Student Visa.
  • Step 4: Upload all the necessary documents stated by the Sweden Migration authority along with the Sweden Universities Confirmation letter and submit the Application form.
  • Step 5: Later, pay the Application fee through online mode and take the printout of the payment as proof.
  • Step 6: After receiving the Confirmation letter or Email from the Sweden Migration Agency submit your Biometric details along with Passport size photos to the nearby Sweden Embassy or Sweden Consulate. 

Processing Time in Sweden Student Visa

The processing time of the Sweden Student Visa will take a minimum of  90 days time period. Moreover, the processing time for Online Visa applications will take less time than the Offline Sweden Student Visa application process. The Swedish  Migration agency takes almost 3-5 months time period to check and accept the Offline application form apply either through Swedish Embassy or through the Swedish Consulate. Students who want to study in Sweden need to apply for  Sweden Student Visa as soon as they decided to study in Sweden. 

Fees for Sweden Student Visa

The Fee for Sweden Student Visa with a residential permit is about SEK 1,500 which means almost 13,021 INR  per member. However, the application will be different based on the age of the applicants. And students must pay the application fee in online payment mode through Visa or Mastercard. But students who are applying through Swedish Embassy need to pay the fee in the form of cash. And the payment will not be refundable if the Sweden Student Visa application is rejected. 

Note: International students who are paying the Visa application fee through Online mode need to check the Bank information whether they are doing Overseas payments or not and also the card which you are using must have a minimum balance stated by the Sweden Migration authority.
