Cardiff and London offer very different student lives. London has more jobs and a bigger Indian community, but costs more. Cardiff is calmer and cheaper, but students say jobs are harder to find. We met two Indian students at Cardiff Metropolitan University, one living in Cardiff and one living in London, to compare. This guide combines their experience with official figures, checked on 27 October 2026.
- For a Student visa, GOV.UK requires living funds of 1,529 pounds a month in London and 1,171 pounds a month outside London, for up to nine months
- The voluntary real Living Wage for 2026-27, announced on 15 October 2026, is 15.45 pounds an hour in London and 14.10 pounds elsewhere in the UK.
What Is the Cardiff vs London Student Cost Difference?
London costs more on paper: the Student visa requires 1,529 pounds a month for London against 1,171 pounds for Cardiff. In practice, the Cardiff student we interviewed spent about 500 to 550 pounds a month, with 300 pounds rent in a shared house, while the London-based student estimated 500 to 600 pounds including travel.
| Cardiff vs London student cost 2026 | Cardiff | London |
|---|---|---|
| Visa living funds (GOV.UK) | 1,171 pounds a month | 1,529 pounds a month |
| Real Living Wage (voluntary, 2026-27) | 14.10 pounds an hour | 15.45 pounds an hour |
| Rent reported by our interviewees | About 300 pounds a month, shared | About 350 pounds a month |
| Monthly spend reported | About 500 to 550 pounds | About 500 to 600 pounds |
Treat the interview figures as individual experiences, not averages. Both students share accommodation and keep costs low. London rents vary hugely by area, and central London is far more expensive than outer areas such as Hounslow, where our London-based student lives.
Transport works differently too. Our London-based student said a bus fare covers unlimited bus changes within an hour, and daily travel is capped, so getting around London by bus can be cheaper than students expect.
Cardiff University Student GuideRead →Is It Easier to Find a Job in Cardiff or London?
London has far more jobs. Our London-based interviewee found work there easily, while the Cardiff student said jobs exist but you may need to look in nearby towns. Both had part-time jobs and saved a little each month. The minimum wage is the same everywhere: 12.71 pounds an hour for workers aged 21 and over.
For graduate jobs, the gap is wider. London has the largest concentration of employers in finance, consulting, technology and business services, while Cardiff's market is smaller and centred on the public sector, media, financial services and engineering. Many Cardiff graduates apply for jobs across the UK, including London.
Some employers pay the voluntary real Living Wage, which is higher in London. If you work in hospitality or retail, ask whether your employer is accredited.

Cardiff is smaller, calmer and walkable, with fewer Indian students, which some find lonely at first and others enjoy. London is fast, diverse and has large Indian communities, especially in areas like Southall and Hounslow. Our London-based student moved there partly to be closer to friends and the Punjabi community.
Cardiff offers easy access to the coast and countryside, a strong student scene and lower day-to-day costs. London offers more events, networking and culture, but daily life is more tiring and travel takes longer.
Can You Live in London and Study in Cardiff?
Our London-based interviewee travels about four hours each way by coach for classes and stays over some nights. It can work for a few class days a week, but it is risky. Universities monitor attendance for Student visa holders, and missing classes can lead to your sponsorship being withdrawn.
Check your timetable, attendance rules and travel costs carefully before deciding to live far from campus. Coach journeys of 20 to 25 pounds each way, as our interviewee reported, add up quickly, and delays can make you miss classes or exams.
UK Student Visa Work Rules 2026: How Many Hours?Read →How Do Rents Compare in Cardiff and London?
Cardiff is one of the more affordable UK student cities for rent, while London is the most expensive. Unipol's 2023-24 survey placed Cardiff among the lower-cost cities, with typical annual rents of about 6,400 to 6,700 pounds. London rents vary widely, and central areas cost far more than outer boroughs.
Our interviewees kept rent low by sharing: about 300 pounds a month in Cardiff and about 350 pounds in outer London. Private rooms, studios or central London flats cost much more, so do not assume these figures will apply to you.
Book accommodation early, use your university's housing service and check whether bills are included. In London, factor in travel time and cost from cheaper outer areas before choosing where to live.
What Should You Check Before Choosing Between Cardiff and London?
Check the course and university first, then the total budget for a year, including rent, travel and the visa funds for each city. Look at part-time job options near where you will live, the university's careers support, attendance rules and how long you will spend travelling each day. Talk to current students in both cities.
Make a simple monthly budget for each city with realistic rent, food, transport and phone costs, and compare it with what you can earn from 20 hours of part-time work a week. Remember that finding a job can take weeks, so keep a buffer for the first two or three months.
Finally, think about where you want to work after graduating. If your goal is a London job, studying in London lets you network and attend events more easily, but many Cardiff graduates also move to London successfully after their course.
Should Indian Students Choose Cardiff or London?
Choose London if jobs, networking and an Indian community matter most and you can afford higher rent. Choose Cardiff if you want lower living costs, a calmer city and a strong university, and you are willing to search harder for part-time work. Either way, your course and university should come first.
Look at the course, the university's career support and graduate outcomes before the city. A good course in Cardiff can lead to jobs in London later, and many students move after graduating.
