What Are GMAT Data Sufficiency Questions?
Data Sufficiency questions do not ask you to solve a problem. Instead, they present a question followed by two statements, and you must decide whether the information given is enough to answer it. They test logical reasoning and data analysis far more than raw calculation, which trips up many first-time GMAT test takers.
A Data Sufficiency problem is built from a question and two numbered statements. Your only job is to judge whether the statements give you enough information to answer the question definitively. You never have to produce the final number, which is what makes the format feel unfamiliar at first.

Every Data Sufficiency question has the same five answer choices, so memorising them saves time. They ask whether statement one alone is sufficient, statement two alone is sufficient, both together are sufficient, either alone is sufficient, or neither is sufficient. Your task is to match the statements to exactly one of these five options.
- Statement (1) alone is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
- Statement (2) alone is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
- Both statements together are sufficient, but neither statement alone is sufficient.
- Each statement alone is sufficient.
- Statements (1) and (2) together are not sufficient.
The wording is identical on every question, so learning these five options in order means you can spend your time on the reasoning rather than on re-reading the choices.

In the current GMAT Focus Edition, Data Sufficiency no longer sits in the Quantitative Reasoning section. It has moved into the new Data Insights section, alongside Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. Data Insights holds twenty questions, and unlike the Quant section it allows an on-screen calculator.
This is the single biggest change most returning test takers miss. Because Data Sufficiency moved to Data Insights, your Quant score now reflects only Problem Solving, while your data-reasoning skills are measured separately in the Data Insights section.

How Should You Approach a Data Sufficiency Question?
Start by reading the question stem carefully, since the most important clues are often hidden there, not in the statements. Evaluate statement one entirely on its own, then forget it and evaluate statement two alone. Only if each is insufficient by itself should you finally combine the two statements together.
- Simplify the question stem first and note exactly what you are being asked to find.
- Analyse statement (1) completely on its own and mark it sufficient or not.
- Reset your thinking and analyse statement (2) alone, ignoring statement (1).
- Only if both are individually insufficient, test the two statements together.
What Are the Best Data Sufficiency Tips and Strategies?
First, decide whether it is a value question or a yes/no question, because sufficiency means different things for each. Remember that a definite yes or a definite no both count as sufficient. Do not fully solve the problem once you know an answer can be found, and watch out for hidden assumptions about signs, zero and fractions.
- Classify the question as a value question or a yes/no question before you start.
- Treat a definite no as just as sufficient as a definite yes.
- Plug in strategic numbers, including negatives, zero and fractions, to test a statement.
- Stop as soon as you know an answer is determinable; do not waste time solving fully.
- Never assume a geometry figure is drawn to scale.
