Germany attracts thousands of Indian students every year because most public universities charge little or no tuition. But you still need a national visa for study before you travel, and the process for Indian applicants has extra steps, including the APS certificate and a blocked account. This guide explains the Germany student visa for Indians applying for 2027 intakes: documents, current fees, the blocked account, timelines and what happens after you arrive.
- The German national visa for study costs 75 euros
- The current blocked account amount is 11,904 euros a year, or 992 euros a month
- Indian applicants need an APS certificate, and APS India introduced the dMAT aptitude test on 29 June 2026 for affected master's applicants, according to our video and APS announcements.
What Is the Germany Student Visa for Indian Students?
It is a national visa, also called a D visa, for long-term study in Germany. It lets you enter Germany to start your course, after which you apply for a residence permit for study at the local foreigners' office. You apply through the German missions in India, and you must hold an admission letter before applying.
If you have not yet received admission, a separate student applicant visa exists, but most Indian students apply once they have a confirmed place. Apply as soon as you have your admission letter, APS certificate and blocked account confirmation, because appointment waiting times in India can be long in peak months.
Where Do Indian Students Apply for a German Student Visa?
You apply to the German mission that covers the state where you live: the Embassy in New Delhi or a Consulate General in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai or Bengaluru. Appointments and document submission usually run through VFS Global centres. Check the German Missions in India website for your jurisdiction and the current booking route.
Book your appointment as early as you can, because waiting times in India can stretch to several weeks in the summer before the winter semester. Most missions expect you to have your APS certificate before you apply, so start the APS process as soon as you shortlist universities.

You usually need a valid passport, the visa application form, biometric photos, the university admission letter, your APS certificate, proof of funds such as a blocked account confirmation, health insurance, academic certificates and transcripts, proof of language skills, a CV and a motivation letter. Check the German mission's current checklist before your appointment.
- Valid passport and copies
- Completed national visa application form and recent biometric photos
- Admission letter from a German university
- APS certificate for Indian academic documents
- Blocked account confirmation or other accepted proof of funds
- Health insurance for the start of your stay
- Degree certificates, mark sheets and language test results
- CV and motivation letter
- Visa fee payment of 75 euros
German missions are strict about documents. Bring originals and the number of copies the checklist asks for, and make sure names and dates match across every document. Missing papers are a common reason for delays.
What Are the Steps to Apply for a Germany Student Visa?
Apply to universities and get your admission letter, obtain the APS certificate, open and fund your blocked account, arrange health insurance, then book your visa appointment and submit your documents. After the visa is issued, you travel, register your address and apply for a residence permit for study at the local foreigners' office.
- Get admission from a German university

- Open a blocked account and transfer 11,904 euros
- Buy health insurance that the mission accepts

How Much Is the Blocked Account for a German Student Visa?
The current blocked account amount is 11,904 euros for one year, which is 992 euros a month released after you arrive. Some guides still list the older figure of 11,208 euros, so ignore them. The amount is reviewed regularly, so recheck it with the German mission before you transfer money for a 2027 intake.
You open the account with an approved provider before applying, transfer the full amount, and get a confirmation to submit with your visa application. After you arrive and open a German bank account, the monthly amount is released to you. Budget extra for provider fees and the gap before your first release.

The APS certificate is issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in New Delhi. It verifies that your Indian academic documents are genuine and meet German standards, and it is mandatory for Indian students applying for a German study visa. Apply early, because processing can take several weeks.
On 29 June 2026 APS India introduced the digital master's aptitude test, called dMAT, as part of the APS process for affected master's applicants. According to our study abroad coach, it is an aptitude check rather than a pass or fail exam. Our earlier guide says it applies from the summer 2027 intake, so check whether your course is affected.
How Much Is the Germany Student Visa Fee?
The current fee for a German national visa for study is 75 euros. It is usually paid in Indian rupees at the current exchange rate, in the way your mission or visa centre specifies. VFS Global charges a separate service fee. The visa fee is not refunded if your application is refused.
Budget for other costs too: the APS certificate, blocked account provider fees, health insurance, document translations and travel to your appointment. These add up, so plan them alongside your tuition and living costs.
How Long Does the Germany Student Visa Take?
Processing times vary by season and mission, and appointment availability in India can add weeks. Apply as soon as you receive your admission letter and have your APS certificate and blocked account confirmation ready. Many students aim to apply at least two to three months before their course starts, and earlier for winter semester intakes.
Keep copies of your full application, including the blocked account confirmation and APS certificate, because you will need them again after arrival.
Track your appointment and application through the German missions in India website. If your course starts soon, ask the mission whether priority options exist, but do not book flights until your visa is issued.
What Questions Are Asked at the Germany Student Visa Interview?
Officers usually ask why you chose Germany, your university and course, how the course fits your previous studies, how you will pay, whether you have learned any German, and what you plan to do after graduating. Answer clearly and honestly, and make sure your answers match your motivation letter and documents.
- Why Germany and why this university?
- How does this course connect to your bachelor's degree or work?
- How are you funding your studies and living costs?
- Do you speak any German, or are you learning?
- What are your plans after graduation?
Is a Study Gap a Problem for a Germany Student Visa?
A study gap is not automatically a problem, but you must explain it. Officers want to see that the gap was used well, for example for work experience, an internship or exam preparation, and that your chosen course follows logically. Support your explanation with experience letters or certificates.
Mention the gap in your CV and motivation letter so the officer sees a clear timeline. Long unexplained gaps, or a course that does not match your background, are more likely to raise questions at the interview.
Germany Intakes 2026-27: Winter vs Summer Semester DeadlinesRead →Do You Need Health Insurance for a Germany Student Visa?
Yes. You need health insurance to get a German student visa and to enrol at a university. Many students take travel health insurance for the visa and the first weeks, then switch to German statutory health insurance when they enrol. Check which policies your German mission and university accept before you buy.
Statutory health insurance is usually required for students at German universities, with some exceptions, for example for older students. Keep proof of insurance with your visa documents and take it to your university enrolment and residence permit appointments.
What Happens After You Arrive in Germany?
Within the first weeks you register your address at the local registration office, open a German bank account so blocked account funds can be released, enrol at your university and apply for a residence permit for study at the foreigners' office. Keep your visa, admission letter, insurance and funds documents ready for these appointments.
Students in Germany can work for a limited number of days each year alongside their studies. After graduating, you can apply for a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a job related to your degree. Check the current rules with the foreigners' office, because they change from time to time.
Cost of Living in Germany for Indian Students 2026Read →Can You Work on a Germany Student Visa?
Yes. International students from outside the EU can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year, according to German universities such as HAW Hamburg, and usually no more than 20 hours a week during the semester. Student assistant jobs at your university are often treated separately. Check your residence permit conditions.
Part-time work helps with living costs but does not replace your blocked account, because the visa needs funds shown in advance. Many students find work in cafes, retail, warehouses or as student assistants. Learning some German makes it much easier to find a job.
Germany Blocked Account 2026: Amount and How to OpenRead →Is Education Free in Germany for Indian Students?
Most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for international students, including Indians, but you pay a semester contribution each term, which varies by university and often includes a public transport ticket. The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg charges non-EU students 1,500 euros a semester. Private universities charge full tuition.
Even without tuition, you must cover living costs, which is why the blocked account is required. Compare the semester contribution, city living costs and course language when choosing between universities.

It can be possible. Spouses of students can apply for a family reunification visa, but they usually need their own application, proof that you can support them financially, suitable housing and documents such as a marriage certificate. Requirements differ case by case, so check with the German mission before you plan.
Why Do Germany Student Visas Get Refused?
Common reasons include missing or inconsistent documents, an APS certificate that does not match your application, insufficient or late blocked account proof, a weak motivation letter, a course that does not fit your background and unclear answers at the interview. Most refusals can be avoided with careful preparation and consistent documents.
- Documents missing or not matching the checklist
- Blocked account not funded or confirmation not issued
- Motivation letter too generic
- Unexplained study gap or unrelated course
- Answers at the interview that contradict your documents
Can You Stay in Germany After Graduating?
Yes. After graduating you can apply for a residence permit to look for a job, valid for up to 18 months, during which you may work without restriction. Once you find a job related to your degree, you can switch to a work residence permit, such as the EU Blue Card if you meet its salary rules.
