Is IELTS still available on paper in 2026?

No. IELTS confirmed that from mid-2026 it no longer offers IELTS as a paper-based test and all tests are delivered on computer, with a Writing on Paper option in selected markets that lets you handwrite the Writing component. Paper results already issued stay valid for the usual two-year period.

How many correct answers do you need for band 7 in IELTS Reading?

IELTS does not publish a fixed conversion table, because the raw-to-band conversion is adjusted for each test version to keep difficulty comparable. Reading has 40 questions worth one mark each, and the raw score is converted to the nine-band scale. Treat any exact number you see quoted online as an approximation, not an official rule.

How is the overall IELTS band score rounded?

The overall band is the average of your four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. If the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band. So an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5 and an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

IELTS results are normally treated as valid for two years. Individual organisations set their own rule, so check with each one. UCL, for example, requires the test to have been taken no more than two years before the proposed enrolment date, which means a September 2026 start needs a test taken on or after 1 September 2024.

What does the IELTS test cost in India?

The IELTS Academic and General Training fee in India is INR 19,000, unchanged across all test centres and both delivery formats after the April 2026 increase. IELTS for UKVI costs INR 19,250, IELTS Life Skills costs INR 18,000, and a One Skill Retake costs INR 12,650.

Which IELTS test do I need for a UK visa?

UK Visas and Immigration only accepts approved Secure English Language Tests. From the IELTS SELT Consortium those are IELTS for UKVI, which tests reading, writing, speaking and listening, and IELTS Life Skills, which tests speaking and listening only. The CEFR level you must reach depends on the immigration route you are applying under.

Can I improve just my Writing score without retaking the whole test?

Yes, through One Skill Retake. You may re-sit one section only, your original test must have been an IELTS on computer test at a participating centre, and the retake must happen within 60 days of the original test date. You can use it once per original test, and not every organisation accepts a One Skill Retake result.

How quickly will I get my IELTS results?

Computer-delivered IELTS results are released 1 to 5 days after the test, IELTS Online results in 6 to 8 days, and paper-based and IELTS for UKVI results in up to 13 days. You can post your Test Report Form to five organisations free of charge and share it electronically with unlimited organisations at no cost.
