IELTS is the English test most Indian students take before applying to universities in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many US and European universities. Before you book, it helps to know what the name means, how the test is structured and how band scores work. This guide explains the IELTS full form, the exam pattern for each section and the band score system for students taking IELTS for 2027 admissions, using IDP India's official pages checked on 29 October 2026.
- IDP India says IELTS on Paper has been discontinued in India and replaced by IELTS Writing on Paper, where you take Listening and Reading on a computer and write by hand
- The test fee is 19,000 rupees for Academic and General Training
- IELTS on Computer results are released within 1 to 2 days, according to IDP India.
What Is the Full Form of IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It tests your English in four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS (IELTS Australia) and Cambridge University Press and Assessment. Universities, employers and immigration authorities in many countries accept it as proof of English.
In India, IDP runs IELTS test centres across the country. There are two main versions. IELTS Academic is for students applying to universities. IELTS General Training is mainly for work and migration. There is also IELTS for UKVI, which meets UK visa rules for some routes, and IELTS Life Skills, a speaking and listening test for some UK family and settlement visas.

The IELTS test has four sections. Listening takes about 30 minutes with 40 questions, Reading takes 60 minutes with 40 questions, Writing takes 60 minutes with two tasks, and Speaking lasts 11 to 14 minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing happen on the same day, and Speaking may be held before or after that day.
| Section (2027) | Time | Questions or tasks | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | About 30 minutes | 4 recordings, 40 questions | Understanding conversations and talks |
| Reading | 60 minutes | 3 passages, 40 questions | Skimming, scanning and detailed reading |
| Writing | 60 minutes | 2 tasks | Describing data or a process, and an essay |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes | 3 parts | Fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation |
The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for Academic and General Training. Reading and Writing differ. Academic Reading uses longer academic texts, and Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, chart or process. General Training uses everyday texts and asks you to write a letter in Task 1.
How Do IELTS on Computer and IELTS Writing on Paper Differ?
On IELTS on Computer you take Listening, Reading and Writing on screen. On IELTS Writing on Paper, IDP India's newer format, you take Listening and Reading on a computer but handwrite the Writing tasks. The fee is the same 19,000 rupees. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner in both cases.
Choose the format that suits how you work. Fast typists often prefer the computer version because they can edit easily. Students who think better on paper may prefer handwriting the essays. Either way, practise on the official familiarisation tests so the screens and timing do not surprise you on test day.
What Is the Difference Between IELTS Academic and General Training?
IELTS Academic is for students applying to undergraduate or postgraduate courses and for some professional registrations. IELTS General Training is for work, secondary education and migration, for example to Canada or Australia. Listening and Speaking are the same in both, but the Reading texts and Writing Task 1 differ.
Check which version your university or visa route asks for before you book, because the scores are not interchangeable. Most study abroad applicants need Academic. If you plan to migrate later, you may need General Training at that stage, even if you studied with an Academic score.
How Are IELTS Band Scores Calculated?
Each section is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. Your overall band is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. IDP India explains that an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
| Section scores 2027 | Average | Overall band |
|---|---|---|
| 7, 6.5, 6.5, 7 | 6.75 | 7 |
| 6.5, 6.5, 6, 6 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 7, 7, 6.5, 6.5 | 6.75 | 7 |
| 6, 6, 6, 5.5 | 5.875 | 6 |
Listening and Reading scores come from the number of correct answers out of 40, converted to a band. Writing is marked on task response, coherence, vocabulary and grammar. Speaking is marked on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Many universities set a minimum for each section as well as an overall band.
IELTS Score 2026: Bands, Calculation and ValidityRead →What IELTS Band Do Universities Usually Ask For?
Requirements vary by university and course. Many UK, Canadian and Australian universities ask for an overall 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate study and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate study, often with no section below 5.5 or 6.0. Competitive courses such as law, medicine and teaching may ask for 7.0 or more.
Always check the exact requirement on your course page, including the minimum for each section. Visa rules can also set their own English level, which may differ from the university's. If you miss one section by a small margin, IDP's One Skill Retake lets you retake a single section for 12,650 rupees in India.
How Long Are IELTS Results Valid?
IDP India says the IELTS partners recommend that a result shows your English ability for a maximum of two years, so most universities and visa authorities accept scores up to two years old. IELTS on Computer results come within 1 to 2 days, while IELTS for UKVI on paper takes about 13 days, according to IDP India.
Plan your test date around your application deadlines. If you will apply over two cycles, make sure your score will still be under two years old when the university or visa office checks it. Book a little early so that you have time to retake if needed.
