NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)

NIOS stands for National Institute of Open Schooling. This Institute was set up in 1989 as a project to facilitate the education of a chunk of population flexibly. The primary aim was to increase the literacy rate of the population and make education available for those who cannot attend regular schools. NIOS was earlier known as National Open School and was changed to NIOS in 2002.

NIOS functions the same as the other boards of education, viz. CBSE and ISC. It comes under the Central Government of India. Ministry of Human Resource Development set up NIOS with an aim to establish distance and open schooling system In India. Today, NIOS has grown into one of the largest Open Schooling Systems in the world.

NIOS provides various study material for all the courses. These include printed notes, a combination of audios and videos for better comprehension, and assistance by Personal Contact Program (PCP) at recognized Institutions. 

NIOS is a national board of education that conducts examinations at high school and intermediate level, similar to CBSE and ISC. Admissions are open twice a year for secondary and Higher secondary courses.

The following courses are offered at NIOS –

Open Basic Education

the course offers basic education to the students, similar to any regular school. It is divided into 3 levels.

  • OBE ‘A’ Level course—Equivalent to class III
  • OBE ‘B’ Level course—Equivalent to class V
  • OBE ‘C’ Level course—Equivalent to class VIII

Secondary Education 

the course is divided into 2 levels –

  • Secondary Course—Equivalent to class X
  • Senior Secondary Course—Equivalent to class XII
  1. Vocational Education Courses
  2. Life enrichment programs
  3. D.EL.ED. course

NIOS D. El. Ed

Diploma in Elementary Education is abbreviated as D. EL. Ed. This is a 2-year diploma course which aims to train the candidates for teaching at the elementary level, which means from classes 1 to 8. Admission in D. EL. Ed is done at the state level, but the process might variate from state to state. In some states, candidates need to qualify an entrance exam to get admission in this course. However, in other states, admissions are done based on the merit of the qualifying exam.

After the successful completion of the program, candidates are eligible to make applications for teaching jobs in schools at the primary level. D. EL. ED course is divided into 4 semesters. The course includes both conventional classroom education combined with practical tasks and internships.   

The objective of the course is to develop teachers with an understanding of child development and the role of a teacher in a young student’s life.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidate must be an Indian Citizen.
  • Candidates must have passed the intermediate exam from any recognized education board of India.
  • A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate is required in the intermediate exam for general students. SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates are allowed a 5% relaxation.
  • The lower age limit for mostly all the states is 17 years. However, candidates are requested to check the same for their respective states.
  • The upper age limit is 34 years, but this might vary by 1 year from the state to state.

Scope

D. EL. ED is a course for teaching aspirants. A candidate with D. EL. ED. Qualification can apply for the following jobs –

  • Teaching in a Government or Private school, from classes 1 to 8.
  • Teaching in kindergartens, playgroups, day-cares, etc.
  • Teaching at an online platform.
  • Give Private Tuitions or coaching classes.
  • Apply for B. Ed. The degree to become eligible for teaching jobs at the secondary level.

NIOS Result

NIOS Result of 10th and 12th

The results of NIOS class 10th class 12th were declared in December 2019. There are the results of the examination held in October 2019. Candidates should visit the official website of NIOS to view their result by entering their respective roll numbers.

Both Class 10th and Class 12th exams are held twice in a year, in April and October-November. The results of the examination held in April are announced in June.

Results of only the candidates who have passed the examination are available online. 

Steps to check NIOS 10th and 12th Result –

  • Step 1: Open the online result portal of NIOS – https://results.nios.ac.in/home/public-exam
  •  Step 2: Enter your enrolment number and fill the captcha and click on ‘submit’.
  • Step 3: Download your result and take a print out for further reference.

Steps to check NIOS 10th and 12th results using SMS service –

Students can make use of the facility of checking their NIOS result using SMS by following the steps below:

  1. Type a message as given below –
  • For class 10th – NIOS10 <space> enrolment number.
  • For class 12th – NIOS12 <space> enrolment number.

Send it to 5676750.

For example – 

If the roll number is 130237649026 then type- NIOS10 <space> 130237649026.

You will receive the result on the same number.

NIOS D. El. Ed. Result

D. El. Ed. Results are available on the online portals only. The candidates will not be sent any copy of the result via any other medium. Follow these steps to view your result –

  • Step 1 – Visit the official result portal – dled.nios.ac.in.
  • Step 2 – Click on your respective semester.
  • Step 3 – Enter your Enrolment Number and Date of Birth.
  • Step 3 – Click on Submit.
  • Step 4 – Your result will be available for download. 
  • Step 5 – Download your result and take a print out of it for future reference.

NIOS – On Demand Result

Exams for class 10th and 12th are conducted every month, on the demand of candidates. The results of these on-demand exams will be declared in the last week of the succeeding month. 

Follow these steps to view your result –

  • Visit the official website – www.nios.ac.in
  • Under the result tab, select On-Demand Examination.
  • Click on “Current Result” under the On-Demand Exam Result section.
  • Enter Your enrolment number and captcha.
  • Click Submit Button.

· Your result will be available for download. 

· Download your result and take a print out of it for future reference.

NIOS Admission

NIOS admission is done via an online portal. 

Follow these steps to apply for online admission – 

  • Open https://sdmis.nios.ac.in/
  • Click on the admission tab.
  • From the drop-down menu, select the desired course.
  • Enter your details like state and ID issued by the government.
  • Click on the Submit button.
  • NIOS admission page will be redirected.
  • Provide all the details in the respective spaces.
  • Move further by clicking next.
  • Upload all the required documents and click submit.
  • Take a printout of the Successful Registration page.
  • This will serve as the receipt of online admission in NIOS.
  • Now you will be prompted for payment.
  • Payment can be made either online or take a print out of the demand draft.
  • Make the payment with a suitable mode.

Candidates can check NIOS admission status from the official website of NIOS.

NIOS Admit Card

Students can download 10th and 12th NIOS hall ticket 2020 in online mode by following the given steps:

  • Open the official website – sdmis.nios.ac.in
  • Click on the Admit Card for the Class 10th option.
  • Enter Enrolment number and select the option “Hall Ticket type”.
  • Click on the submit tab to generate the admit card.
  • Download the admit card and take a printout of it. 
  • Keep it safe for future reference.

Steps to Download NIOS Hall Ticket 2020 for Class 12th

  • Visit the official website: sdmis.nios.ac.in
  • Click on the Admit Card for the Class 12th option.
  • A window will open, with the title “Theory and Practical Admit Card”
  • Enter Enrolment number and select the option “Hall Ticket type”.
  • Click on the submit tab to generate the admit card.
  • Download the admit card and take a printout of it. 
  • Keep it safe for future reference

Which Board is NIOS?

NIOS is itself a board of education which comes under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It is the same as the boards like CBSE or ICSE/ISC and other state boards. NIOS is recognized by the Central and State governments. It provides open schooling and distance learning facilities.
