Its structure, duration, and entry requirements vary widely across countries and disciplines, typically spanning one to two years.

Popular postgraduation courses span diverse disciplines, including the Master of Computer Applications, Master of Business Administration, Master of Laws, and master's degrees in psychology, English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, library science, and journalism. Each offers advanced, specialised knowledge that builds on undergraduate study and prepares graduates for skilled professional or academic careers.

A postgraduate diploma is a shorter, career-focused qualification taken after a bachelor's degree, usually lasting eight months to two years.
