Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF)

Prime Minister Research Fellowship or PMRF is a scheme for the talented students of the country for the doctoral programs in Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Indian Institute of Technology for the educational research purposes on the science and technical areas, prioritize on national properties.

PMRF gives a golden opportunity to the students who are interested in doing Ph.D. studies in the field of Science and Technology from reputed Indian Institutions. Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India offers this Fellowship to the rightful students.

PMRF Application Time

Every year in the month of April-May, the portal for applying in PMRF opens. The deadline for submission of the PMRF application was 11.30 pm on 7th April for the previous year’s 2019 session. The Fellowship was given by MHRD in May 2019.

PMRFPrevious Year

The portal was opened in March. The deadline for applying was 7th April 2019. The Fellowship was disbursed in May. Top 100 NIRF ranked universities were chosen as the host of PMRF.

PMRF Key Eligibility

The aspiring applicants should maintain the following eligibility criteria to apply for the PMRF fellowship:

  1. The first and the most important point is the applicant must be pursuing or completed the final year of 4/5 year undergraduate/ 5 year integrated M.Tech/ 5 year integrated M.Sc/ 5 year undergraduate postgraduate both degrees in Science and Technology from any of the IITs, NIITs, IISERs, IIEST, IISc.
  2. For the student who isn’t from the previously mentioned institutions, must be pursuing or completed final year of 4/5 year undergraduate/ 5 year integrated M.Tech/ 5 year integrated M.Sc/ 5 year undergraduate postgraduate both degrees in Science and Technology. A CGPA or CPI of a minimum of 8.0(on a scale of 10) or equivalent is needed for the application. 
  3. The applicant must be pursuing or completed their M.Tech or M.Sc research at IITs, IISc, IISERs having at least 8.0 CGPA or CPI at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses. 
  4. They must clear the GATE examination.

Amount of the PMRF Scholarship

A specified process is selecting candidates after fulfilling the above criteria. Candidates who are selected will get an offer to do Ph.D. studies in one of the IISc/IISERs/IITs. PMRF also offers the candidates a suitable amount of financial support.

INR 70000 is given per month for the first two years to the students. INR 75000 per month is provided for 3rd year, and for the final two years, INR 80000 is provided monthly. INR lakh per annum is granted for the selected fellows.

Documents Required For PMRF

The following documents are needed for applying PMRF:

  • Passport size photo
  • Scanned copy of mark sheets/grade sheets
  • Scanned copy of GATE qualifying Certificate 
  • Abstract Copy(1000 words max)
