The Ratan Tata Scholarship is a popular nickname rather than an official award. Indian engineering students actually apply to two Tata-funded programmes: the Tata Scholarship at Cornell University for undergraduate study, and the J N Tata Endowment loan scholarship for postgraduate, doctoral or postdoctoral study overseas. Both are administered independently of each other.
Searches for a Ratan Tata Scholarship almost always land on one of these two schemes. Neither was personally created by Ratan Naval Tata. The Cornell fund comes from the Tata Education and Development Trust, the overseas philanthropic affiliate of the Tata Group, while the J N Tata Endowment predates him by more than a century.
Ratan Naval Tata was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist, chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012 and later chairman emeritus. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, and he died on 9 October 2024 at the age of 86.
Understanding which scheme you actually qualify for matters, because the eligibility rules are completely different. Cornell funds undergraduates who have studied in India. The J N Tata Endowment funds only graduates going abroad for a Masters, PhD or postdoctoral programme, and it is a loan rather than a grant.

Who Funds the Tata Scholarship at Cornell and What Does It Cover?
Cornell's Tata Scholarship is funded by a USD 25 million endowment from the Tata Education and Development Trust, a philanthropic affiliate of the Tata Group. It supports approximately 20 Indian scholars at any point in time and covers need-based aid for up to eight semesters of undergraduate study, or ten semesters in architecture.
To be considered you must have attended secondary school in India, been admitted to Cornell as an undergraduate, and been determined eligible for need-based financial aid. Preference goes to admitted students in a defined set of colleges and majors.
The programmes Cornell lists as preferred for the scholarship are:
- College of Architecture, Art and Planning
- Cornell Duffield College of Engineering
- Applied Economics and Management
- Majors in the biological sciences
- Majors in the physical sciences
- Majors in the social sciences
Funding continues for the normal length of the degree. Double majors and dual degrees do not attract extra semesters of funding, so plan your course load with that limit in mind.

This is the single most misunderstood point about the scheme. Applicants routinely hunt for a Tata Scholarship form that does not exist. What decides the outcome is your Cornell admission decision and your financial aid file.

What Is the J N Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship?
The J N Tata Endowment was established in 1892 by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata and awards merit-based loan scholarships of up to Rs 20 lakh for overseas postgraduate study. It carries simple interest of two percent per year, and more than 100 scholars are selected annually across engineering, sciences, management and the arts.
The endowment is the oldest of the Tata education schemes and the one most engineering graduates end up using. It supports full-time Masters, PhD and postdoctoral study abroad in any discipline. Not every selected candidate receives the maximum amount, because awards are set on merit and need.
Repayment is spread over the third to the seventh year from the date of disbursement, in equal instalments. The trustees may waive interest at their discretion where repayment is made on schedule. Selected scholars who accept the loan may also qualify for a criteria-based travel grant and gift award from the allied Tata Trusts, though the trusts do not publish fixed amounts for these.

You must be an Indian citizen with an undergraduate degree from a recognised Indian university and at least 60 percent marks on average. For the 2026-27 cycle you could not be older than 45 years as on 30 June 2026. Study inside India, distance learning and online programmes are not eligible.
The eligibility rules are strict and are applied literally, so read them before spending time on the form:
- Indian citizenship is mandatory.
- Your undergraduate degree must be from a recognised university in India.
- A minimum average of 60 percent in your undergraduate or postgraduate studies is required.
- You must not be older than 45 years as on 30 June of the award year.
- The programme abroad must be a full-time graduate-level course: Masters, PhD or postdoctoral.
- Final-year students and those awaiting results may apply and update the endowment once admitted.
- If you are already studying abroad, at least one full academic year must remain at the time of the award.
Distance learning, online degrees, exchange semesters and any programme delivered within India fall outside the scheme entirely.
When Do J N Tata Endowment Applications Open and Close?
Applications for the Fall 2026 to Spring 2027 cycle opened on 5 January 2026 and closed in March 2026, with the extended last date listed as 29 March 2026. The aptitude test was held on 27 April 2026, interviews ran through May and June, and awards were announced in mid-July 2026.
The endowment runs one cycle a year and the calendar is stable, so engineering graduates targeting a Fall 2027 intake should expect the window to open in early January 2027. Check the official site before you plan, because the closing date was extended during the 2026 cycle.

Which Other Tata Trusts Education Grants Are Available?
Beyond the two flagship awards, Tata Trusts runs a Means Grant for financially needy students in Maharashtra from Grade Eight upwards, a Civil Aviation Grant for commercial pilot training, a Professional Enhancement Grant for practising medical professionals, and the Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust scholarship for Indian women graduates studying overseas.
The Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust supports Indian women graduates taking overseas Masters degrees focused on women and children, covering subjects such as public health, counselling, gender studies, human rights, social work and the education of children with special needs. It funds up to ten beneficiaries a year and covers part of the tuition fee. Applications for 2026-27 are closed.
The Lady Tata Memorial Trust is a separate arm funding PhD fellowships of up to five years, research grants in leukaemia and cancer biology, and Young Researcher Awards for scientists under 40. Engineering students working in biomedical or materials research sometimes qualify here.
Note that the Means Grant is restricted to students studying in Maharashtra and is need-based rather than merit-based, so it is not a route for study abroad.
How Should You Prepare a Strong Tata Scholarship Application?
Start with a clean academic record, then build a statement of purpose that explains your engineering goals and how you will contribute to India. Gather marksheets, admission or application evidence, identity proof and income documents early. For the J N Tata Endowment, prepare for a written aptitude test followed by a panel interview.
Selection for the J N Tata Endowment is merit-based and weighs academic excellence, clarity of purpose and your likely contribution to India. The aptitude test and interview stages mean a strong application alone is not enough, so treat the test date as a fixed exam commitment.
What Documents Do You Need to Keep Ready?
- Marksheets and degree certificates for every completed qualification
- Admission letter or evidence that you have applied to the overseas university
- Identity proof such as an Aadhaar card or PAN card
- Family income proof, including ITR or Form 16 where applicable
- Fee receipts for the current academic year where the scheme asks for them
- A statement of purpose written specifically for the scholarship, not reused from your university application
Write the scholarship statement separately from your university statement of purpose. The trusts want to see why you need the funding and what you intend to do with the qualification afterwards, which is a different question from why you want the course.
