- The University of Toronto treats an Indian three-year bachelor's degree as equivalent only when a master's degree follows it, while four-year degrees such as BTech, BPharm and BArch stand on their own
- MIT Sloan accepts a three-year overseas degree for its Master of Business Analytics
- Duke has made GRE submission optional for 2026 Engineering Management applicants and asks for no work experience on the campus programme
- Harvard Business School's 2+2 route lets final-year undergraduates hold a deferred MBA place, and its Class of 2027 averaged 4.9 years of work experience.
Choosing a master's degree abroad is rarely a free choice. Admissions committees read your transcript first and ask whether the bachelor's degree you already hold prepares you for the programme you have applied to. This related courses list sets out, degree by degree, the master's programmes that follow naturally from the most common Indian bachelor's qualifications, and pairs each group with entry rules taken from the universities' own admissions pages for 2026 entry.
What Does a Related Courses List Actually Mean?
A related courses list maps each bachelor's degree to the master's programmes that admissions committees treat as a natural continuation of it. Universities judge subject overlap, prerequisite coursework and degree length rather than job titles, so your safest options sit close to your undergraduate syllabus or add a management layer above it.
Two filters decide whether an application is even read. The first is the length and level of your bachelor's degree, because a North American master's is normally built on a four-year undergraduate degree. The second is prerequisite coursework, which is why a biotechnology master's asks for biochemistry and an engineering management master's asks for calculus. Everything else, including test scores and work experience, is applied after those two filters.
| Entry Rule (2026 Entry) | What the Official Page States | University |
|---|---|---|
| Three-year bachelor's degree | An Indian three-year bachelor's counts as equivalent only when combined with a master's degree; four-year degrees such as BTech, BEng, BPharm, BArch, BDS and MBBS stand alone | University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies |
| Minimum academic standing | An appropriate bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, with a final-year average of at least mid-B from a recognised university | University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies |
| Three-year degree for a United States master's | Applicants must hold a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year equivalent from outside the United States by the time of matriculation | MIT Sloan, Master of Business Analytics |
| GRE for engineering management | Submission of official GRE scores is optional for 2026 applicants | Duke University, Master of Engineering Management |
| Work experience for engineering management | Work experience is not required for the campus program | Duke University, Master of Engineering Management |
| Deferred MBA entry | Applicants must graduate between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026, then complete a minimum of two and a maximum of four years of work before enrolling | Harvard Business School, 2+2 programme |
Which Master's Courses Suit Civil and Structural Engineering?
Civil and structural engineering graduates stay closest to their syllabus with an MS in Civil, Structural, Environmental or Transportation Engineering. Construction Management and Engineering Management suit students aiming at site leadership, while Business Analytics, Data Science and Operations Research convert the same quantitative training into analytics careers without demanding a fresh technical base.
A four-year BTech or BE in civil or structural engineering is one of the strongest starting points in this list, because the University of Toronto names BTech and BEng explicitly among the degrees equivalent to its own four-year bachelor's. That removes the degree-length problem that affects three-year graduates and leaves the choice to be made on coursework alone.
- MS in Civil Engineering
- MS in Structural Engineering
- MS in Environmental Engineering
- MS in Construction Management
- MS in Transportation Engineering
- MS in Energy, Sustainable and Renewable Systems
- MS in Engineering Management
- MS in Financial Engineering

Which Master's Courses Follow Computer Science?
Computer science graduates map cleanly onto an MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or Information Technology. Management Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction sit between technology and business, while Data Science, Business Analytics and Operations Research reward the mathematics and programming already covered in a four-year BTech degree.
Analytics programmes are the most common crossover for this group, and they are also the ones with the clearest published rules. MIT Sloan states that applicants to its Master of Business Analytics commonly come from engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, technology and other quantitative or analytical fields, and that the programme is designed for recent graduates and early-career professionals rather than experienced managers.

Which Master's Courses Follow Electrical Engineering?
Electrical engineering graduates continue directly into an MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Embedded Systems or Nanotechnology. Departments look for circuits, signals and mathematics coursework rather than work experience. Engineering Management, Operations Research and Business Analytics stay open if you would rather move towards planning, product or analytics roles instead.
Test policy has moved a long way since this list was first published. Duke confirms that submission of official GRE scores is optional for 2026 applicants to its Master of Engineering Management, and adds that non-engineers need calculus plus a minimum of two courses in engineering, computer science, mathematical science or physical science. An electrical engineering graduate clears that prerequisite automatically.
- MS in Electrical Engineering
- MS in Telecommunications
- MS in Computer Engineering
- MS in Embedded Systems
- MS in Nanotechnology
- MS in Management Information Systems
- MS in Engineering Management
- MS in Financial Engineering
- MS in Operations Research

Which Master's Courses Follow Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineering graduates can pursue an MS in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Industrial or Production Engineering, and increasingly Robotics, Mechatronics or Computational Mechanics. These programmes expect thermodynamics, mechanics and design coursework. Engineering Management, Operations Research and Financial Engineering suit graduates who want that quantitative training applied outside a core design role.
Robotics and mechatronics have grown fastest within this group, and both usually sit inside a mechanical or electrical department rather than as standalone schools. Where a programme is jointly run, check which department owns the admissions decision, because the prerequisite list and the deadline follow the owning department rather than the programme name.
- MS in Mechanical Engineering
- MS in Automotive Engineering
- MS in Aerospace Engineering
- MS in Space Engineering
- MS in Manufacturing Engineering
- MS in Industrial Engineering
- MS in Production Engineering
- MS in Mechatronics
- MS in Robotics

What Can You Study After BTech Biotechnology?
Biotechnology graduates commonly apply for an MS in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or Biomedical Engineering. Johns Hopkins expects an undergraduate degree in the natural sciences or engineering, a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and one semester of biochemistry.
This is the group where prerequisite coursework matters most, so read the course list before the ranking. The Johns Hopkins MS in Biotechnology is a ten-course, thesis-optional degree that can be taken full time or part time, and its published requirements name the exact subjects an applicant must already have studied.
| MS Biotechnology Entry 2026 | Johns Hopkins Published Requirement |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate degree | Natural sciences or engineering |
| Minimum grade point average | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and meeting it does not guarantee admission |

What Can You Study After a Bachelor's in Pharmacy?
Pharmacy graduates continue into an MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences or Pharmacy Administration. A Master of Public Health or a Master of Health Administration widens the route towards policy, regulatory and hospital roles. Canadian universities treat a four-year BPharm as a full bachelor's equivalent in its own right.
The degree-length advantage is worth stating plainly. The University of Toronto lists BPharm among the Indian qualifications requiring a minimum of four years of study that are equivalent to its own four-year bachelor's degree, so a pharmacy graduate applying to Canada does not face the extra hurdle that a three-year commerce or science graduate does.
- MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences
- MS in Pharmacology
- MS in Toxicology
- MS in Medicinal Chemistry
- MS in Biomedical Sciences
- MS in Pharmacy Administration
- MS in Biochemistry
- Master of Public Health
- Master of Health Administration
- MS in Management
What Can You Study After a Bachelor's in Architecture?
Architecture graduates choose between a professional Master of Architecture and specialist routes such as landscape architecture, urban design, construction management or sustainability. At the University of Texas at Austin the first professional MArch needs 96 credit hours, falling to 60 credit hours on the advanced standing track for holders of a preprofessional degree.
Credit hours, not years, decide how long the degree actually takes, and the saving for an architecture graduate is substantial. The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture publishes three accredited routes, and its next accreditation visit for all of them is scheduled for 2026.
| Accredited Architecture Route 2026 | Published Requirement at UT Austin |
|---|---|
| BArch | 161 credit hours |
| MArch First Professional | Non-preprofessional degree plus 96 credit hours |
| MArch First Professional Advanced Standing | Preprofessional degree plus 60 credit hours |

Which Master's Courses Suit a Three-Year BCom Degree?
A three-year BCom opens MS Finance, MS Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Master in Management, plus Business Analytics at selective schools. The University of Toronto counts an Indian three-year degree only when a master's follows it, so Canada usually needs an extra qualification that a United States application does not.
The old version of this list simply said Except Canada, which is misleading. The rule is specific rather than a blanket exclusion. The University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies lists the Indian equivalent of its four-year bachelor's degree as a degree requiring a minimum of four years of study, or the completion of both a three-year bachelor's degree and a master's. A BCom graduate who adds an MCom or an MBA in India therefore becomes eligible. In the United States the position is different again, with MIT Sloan stating that applicants must hold a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year equivalent from outside the United States.
- MS in Finance
- MS in Marketing
- MS in Supply Chain Management
- Master in Management, also called MIM
- MS in Business Analytics at selective schools
- MBA through deferred admission at a small number of schools
- MBA after two or more years of full-time work
Do You Need Work Experience or a GRE Score in 2026?
Work experience is optional for most taught master's degrees. Duke states that work experience is not required for its campus Engineering Management programme and that GRE submission is optional for 2026 applicants. The MBA is the exception, with the Harvard Business School Class of 2027 averaging 4.9 years of work before enrolling.
Deferred admission is the bridge between those two positions. Harvard Business School runs the 2+2 route for undergraduates in their final year of study and for master's students who moved straight from an undergraduate degree without full-time work, provided they graduate between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026. A valid GMAT or GRE score is required, students in PhD, law and medical programmes are not eligible, and admitted candidates work for a minimum of two and a maximum of four years before joining.
For everything other than an MBA, treat work experience as a tie-breaker rather than a gate. The Harvard Class of 2027 profile shows 943 students from 9,409 applications, with a middle 80 per cent range of three to seven years of experience, which is a useful benchmark for when an MBA becomes realistic rather than aspirational.
