Most institutions admit in Fall, and a smaller number also admit in Spring and Summer. Spring intake, also called the January intake, is the second window and is the practical route for students who missed Fall deadlines or needed more time for tests and funding.

1. Shortlist programs from January to March and confirm on each department page that it admits in the spring term, since many do not.
2. Check each shortlisted program for required tests. Requirements vary: UC San Diego Computer Science and Engineering states the GRE is not required for its PhD and MS applications for Fall 2027, while other departments still ask for it.
3. Sit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE, and the GRE or GMAT where required, by April or May so scores reach universities before the earliest July deadlines.
4. Collect transcripts, two or three letters of recommendation, your statement of purpose, CV and passport copy through May and June.
