Choosing the right UK intake affects your fees, your visa timeline and even how long you can stay after you graduate. Most Indian students look at September or January, and some look at May. This guide sets out the UCAS dates for 2027 entry and the way postgraduate intakes work, checked on 23 October 2026. Where the sources we could reach disagree, we say so.

Which Intakes Do UK Universities Offer?

⚡ Quick Answer

September is the main intake and has the widest choice of courses and scholarships. January is the second intake, mostly for postgraduate courses. May or summer is the smallest, offered by a limited set of universities. Not every course starts in every intake, so check each course page.

The September intake is the busiest, with the most courses and the most competition for places and scholarships. January suits students who miss September or need more time to prepare, but there are fewer courses. May is offered by a handful of universities, and guides name Kent, Brunel and Bedfordshire as examples. Always confirm on the university's own course page.

We could not open the UCAS key dates page directly, so these dates come from university pages and guides that quote UCAS. A third-party tracker listed a different January date and conflicts with the rest, so we left it out. Confirm every date on UCAS before you rely on it. UCAS also says many universities keep accepting international applications later in the year.

When Should You Apply for a September Master's?

⚡ Quick Answer

Postgraduate courses are not applied for through UCAS. You apply to each university directly, and each one sets its own deadlines, often rolling until the course is full. Applying early gives you time for the offer, your English test, the CAS and the visa. Check each university's international page for dates.

Indian applicants usually need several weeks between an offer and a visa. You need an unconditional offer, a CAS from the university, and your funds in place before you apply. GOV.UK says you can apply for a Student visa up to six months before your course starts, so you do not need to wait.

Is the January Intake Worth Choosing?

⚡ Quick Answer

It can be, if your course is offered in January and you need time to prepare or missed September. The trade-offs are fewer courses, less choice of scholarships, and a graduation date later in the year. A January start also affects the Graduate visa length, because the rules change on 1 January 2027.

The Graduate visa is shorter for people who apply on or after 1 January 2027, so a student who finishes a January 2027 master's in early 2028 would fall under the 18-month rule. Our Graduate visa guide sets out the dates and fees, and you should check GOV.UK for the latest rules.

How Does the Intake Affect Your Visa Timeline?

⚡ Quick Answer

Your visa application depends on your CAS, your funds and your offer, not on the intake itself. Plan backwards from the course start date. You need time for the English test, the university's CAS, a funds period of 28 days in your account and the visa decision. GOV.UK shows current processing times.

Most delays come from documents, such as a bank statement that is too new or a missing English test result. Start the funds period early, and keep copies of every document. Our UK funds guide explains the 28-day rule and which accounts the Home Office accepts.

What Should Indian Students Have Ready for Each Intake?

⚡ Quick Answer

Have your passport, academic transcripts and degree certificates, an English test result if the university asks for one, a personal statement and references where required, and proof of funds. After an offer you need a CAS before applying for the visa. Requirements differ by course, so check each page.

Request transcripts early, because universities in India can take weeks to issue them. If you need an English test, book it with a margin for retakes. Keep scanned copies of every document in one folder, with the names the university asks for.

Write your personal statement for each course, not one version for all. Admissions teams read for the reasons you chose that subject and that university, so use real examples from your studies or work. If a university asks for references, tell your referees early and give them the deadline.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Deadline?

⚡ Quick Answer

For undergraduate courses, you can still apply after the main UCAS deadline, and universities may consider late applications if places remain. UCAS Extra and Clearing exist for applicants without offers. For postgraduate courses, ask the university about places left, a later intake, or a different course starting at the same time.

Do not pay an agent for a guaranteed place. Contact the admissions office and ask directly. If you move to the next intake, check whether your English test, your funds and your documents are still valid by then.
