The University of Amsterdam is one of the well-known universities located in the heart of a vibrant European capital city. Following its origins to the foundation of the Illustre Athenaeum in 1632, the UvA is a new, research-intensive university. Established by municipal authorities in 1632 and later renamed for the city of Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands ‘ third-oldest University. 

The University of Amsterdam (UvA), ranked among the top 15 universities in Europe and the top 65 in the world, stands for limitless desire – learning, research, and advancement for a better world. Until the 19th century it had just 250 students and eight professors, and now it is one of Europe’s largest research universities, with 31,186 students, 4,794 faculty and 1,340 Doctoral students.

Faculties

The University is organized into seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economics and Business, Science, Law, Medicine, Dentistry.

Faculty of Economics and Business:   

Established in 1922, the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) has the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE) and the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) under it. The staff and the student currently is near about 4,000 and 600 respectively. 

Faculty of Science

The Science Faculty is made up of four departments and 1200 researchers and lecturers working in eight research centers. The main faculty buildings are situated on the Science Park Amsterdam campus.

Faculty of Humanities

University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Humanities has six departments under it, namely Dutch studies, History, European Studies and Religion, Archaeology and Classics, Language and Literature, Media studies, Philosophy, and Art and Cultural studies. Established in 1997, it has about 6000 students and about 1000 employees.

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

Being the largest in the social and behavioral sciences in the Netherlands, The faculty has about 10,000 students and 1,200 staff members.

Faculty of Dentistry

ACTA is a joint initiative between the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam Faculties of Dentistry, which was established in 1984. With an annual intake of 128 new students, about 500 staff members, and a total of 1000 graduates, ACTA is the largest dental education and training organization.

Faculty of Medicine

Every year at the University of Amsterdam, around 350 1st-year students start their medical studies at the Academic Medical Center. The Academic Medical Center (AMC) has three main tasks as a university medical center: treating patients, academic medical research, and provides medical education.

Faculty of Law

Back in 1602, the Law Faculty was housed in the Oudemanhuispoort, a historic building dating in the center of Amsterdam, and is now situated on the newly designed Roetersiland campus. It has about 3,700 students and 330 members of academic staff.

Academics and Courses:

The University of Amsterdam offers over 200 English-taught degree programs, which include undergraduate programs, post-graduate programs, doctoral and post-doctoral programs. These are full-time as well as part-time courses. The University has partnerships with almost 200 international institutions, promoting projects for better learning for students and staff exchange.

Campus

The University performs activities of education and research on four campuses. Most of the buildings at the University of Amsterdam are located in the heart of Amsterdam, with only faculties of Science, Medicine, and Dentistry located outside the city center. 

The University of Amsterdam lies within the Netherlands ‘ biggest megacity, the Randstad, which has a population of 7.2 million. The Faculty of Science is situated in the newly built Science Park Amsterdam, on the east side of the city, the Faculty of Medicine is housed in the Academic Medical Center (AMC), and the Faculty of Dentistry is located on the campus of the VU University Medical Center in the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA) in the southern district of Zuidas.

Admissions

The admissions at the University of Amsterdam is based on the IELTS score and TOEFL score. For some courses like MSc Political Science – International Relations, MSc Software Engineering, IELTS score should be 7. The minimum IELTS score for any course is 6.5.

For courses like Masters of Business Administration, MSc FinanceMSc Business Administration (Marketing)and Executive MSc in International Finance (MIF): General (track)GRE and GMAT scores are also accepted. The fee structure for the various courses lies in the range of INR 5 Lakh to INR 25 Lakh.

Facilities

The University of Amsterdam provided its students with many facilities like religious, medical and sports centers, restaurants, and gathering halls. The University has several student groups that conduct over 50 sports and recreation activities like dance, drama, tennis, skating, aerobics, music, swimming, golf, and photography.

Alumni

Six Nobel laureates and five Dutch Prime Ministers were created at the University of Amsterdam. The University also maintains a list of prominent alumni in the areas of mathematics, science, politics, literature, media, art, and athletics who are pioneers and award winners.
