Backlogs are exams that were not cleared in the first attempt. Most international institutions in popular countries accept applications with backlogs if they are cleared before the start of the study program.

Australian private universities accept a maximum of 7-8 backlogs. Go8 universities accept 2-3 backlogs. Public institutions may accept less or equal to 8 backlogs. Note: Australian institutions consider the number of attempts as backlogs.

Canadian universities accept a maximum of 5 backlogs with a minimum average of 70% in previous study qualifications. Higher backlogs considered for PG degree and diploma programs on a case-to-case basis.

Most Kiwi universities accept students with a maximum of 5 backlogs. Some select institutions consider students with 12-15 backlogs. Importance of a good IELTS score and tangible research projects or extracurricular activities.

Some UK institutions accept students with 15 backlogs. Good English-language proficiency test scores (e.g., IELTS band 6 or above) are essential. Good letter of recommendation and Well written SOP too.

American universities prefer students with no backlogs. Exceptions may accept a maximum of 5 backlogs with a good GRE score (315-325). Admission based on the university's discretion for 10-12 backlogs.

Irish institutions usually accept applications with a maximum of four to five backlogs whereas some might only accept a maximum of two to three backlogs.

Planning saves time. Writing down not only helps you memorise stuff, but it also becomes your go-to sheet for revision at the time of the exam. Focus more on the weak topics, the ones that are difficult to memorise or understand.

Justify backlogs to the admission committee. Highlight extracurricular activities and genuine reasons in the Statement of Purpose (SOP). Explain honestly about the experiences during the period of backlogs. Prepare yourself for the standardised admission test.
