Born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand), MS Dhoni belongs to a Hindu Rajput family. His father, Pan Singh, worked in MECON. Dhoni has a sister, Jayanti Gupta, and a brother, Narendra Singh Dhoni.

Dhoni's schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Ranchi, Jharkhand, saw him excel in badminton, football, and cricket. He played as a goalkeeper in football and cricket for a local club.

Impressing with wicket-keeping at Commando Cricket Club, Dhoni's talent led to selection in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship. He pursued cricket after high school.
