M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) - Admissions & Scope

M.B.B.S. or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is derived from 2 Words, M.B. - 'Medicinae Baccalaureus' (Bachelor of Medicine in Latin) and B.S. - 'Bachelor of Surgery' (in English). In spite of the fact that the name proposes 2 isolate degrees, it is just 1 degree. This is the convention of United Kingdom and different nations are following this custom. While in the US, both of the degrees are awarded separately as the M.D (Doctor of Medicine) and D.O (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).It is an Undergraduate Academic Degree Course managing Medicine and Surgery. To become a Doctor in Allopathic Medicine M.B.B.S. is a must. Candidates are given a top to bottom and legitimate learning of the human body through hypothesis, reasonable involvement in the analyzation of bodies and watching different kinds of medical procedures.

The course consists of 9 semesters. The course syllabus is divided in various parts such as is Pre-clinical, Para-Clinical and Clinical part.

Eligibility

The minimum eligibility for the MBBS course is 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. English is also a mandatory subject in many of the universities and colleges. However, for admission in AIIMS an aggregate of 60% for the general category candidates and 50% for SC/ST candidates is required. Students are also required to take an entrance exam for admission in any of the medical colleges. The 2 major entrance exams are AIIMS Entrance Exam and NEET Exam. Admission Process

Students should qualify in the entrance exam of NEET or AIIMS for admission in any medical college.

Earlier, a student had to obtain an essentiality certificate from the MCI for admission in any medical college outside India. The Medical Council of India (MCI) is a governmental body that focuses on the establishment and maintenance of high standards of medical education within India. However, after 2018, the students willing to study MBBS in foreign universities do not have to necessarily clear the NEET.

Some of the major MCI Rules for MBBS from abroad are following:

  • Any primary medical qualification confirmed by the Indian Embassy can be considered as recognized medical qualification by MCI for issuing Eligibility Certificate.
  • The student must enquire about the status of the medical qualification of the university from MCI and fee structure from the Institution/University concerned.
  • Any aspirant, who has passed the qualifying examination and wishes to pursue MBBS, has to approach MCI for issuing an Eligibility Certificate for that purpose.
  • The application form for Eligibility Certificate should be submitted with all the relevant documents including a demand draft for Rs.500/- in favor of Secretary, Medical Council of India, New Delhi.
  • No aspirant shall be permitted to sit for the Screening Test, for the purpose of registration in India, unless he/she produces the Eligibility Certificate issued by MCI.
  • The application has to be made in the format mentioned by the Medical Council of India. The application has to be submitted with original mark sheet or certificate of the qualifying examination and photocopies of the documents.
  • In case the document furnished by the candidate does not contain his/her birth date, then a government authorized certificate that acknowledges the same has to be produced by the candidate along with a Demand Draft of an amount specified by the council.

If an applicant belongs to any of reserved categories, they have to submit a certificate stating the same.

Syllabus and Course Description

As per the Medical Council of India, the MBBS course consists of 9 semesters that is, four and a half year followed by a mandatory internship of one year. The first part of the syllabus is Pre-clinical, which mainly covers the first two semesters of the course focusing on the basic knowledge of various subjects like anatomy, physiology etc. The second phase is the Para-Clinical which consists of three semesters (one and a half years). It focuses on the teaching of subjects like forensic medicine, pathology etc. along with the essential aspect of the course- Community Medicine. The third phase is the Clinical phase which concentrates on practical knowledge and practice along with subjects like psychiatry, pediatrics etc.

A student to be eligible for admission should obtain AAA grades with either chemistry or biology, a minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7.0 with scores not less than 6.5 in all four categories of listening, speaking, reading and writing. An aspirant should further clear the UK Clinical Aptitude test (UKCAT)/Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) covering the areas of verbal, quantitative and abstract reasoning along with decision analysis and situational judgments.

The course ranges from four to six years. On completion of two years of study, the students are required to experience foundation training for two years. Specialty training has to be undertaken after completion of four years of study in the area one wishes to specialize, which could last up to seven years.

  • Australia

A quality oriented course in medical field has been developed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Minimum IELTS requirement is 7. The students are further required to qualify the Undergraduate Medicine and health Admission Test (UMAT) organized by the AQF. International applicants may also apply with Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT) or Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) scores. The minimum GAMSAT score should be at least 50 in each section, and a score of at least 50 overall.

Usually the course takes four to six years to complete followed by one year of internship and one year of residency. The specialty training is of three to eight years but is optional.
