M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) - Admissions & Scope

M.B.B.S. or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is composed of 2 Words, M.B. - 'Medicinae Baccalaureus' (Bachelor of Medicine in Latin) and B.S. - 'Bachelor of Surgery' (in English). In spite of the fact that the name proposes 2 isolate degrees, it is just 1 degree. This is the convention of United Kingdom and different nations are following this custom. While in the US, both of the degrees are awarded separately as the M.D (Doctor of Medicine) and D.O (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).It is an Undergraduate Academic Degree Course managing Medicine and Surgery. To become a Doctor in Allopathic Medicine M.B.B.S. is a must. Candidates are given a top to bottom and legitimate learning of the human body through hypothesis, reasonable involvement in the analyzation of bodies and watching different kinds of medical procedures.

Specialisations in MBBS

Major Specializations: General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology etc.

Super Specializations: These are usually done after 3-4 years of further studies are-  Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardio-Thoracic surgery, Conito-Urinary surgery, Pediatric surgery, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Clinical Hematology etc.

The number of Indian students heading abroad is increasing day by day. For Indian students, destinations like China, Ukraine, and Russia are some of the major emerging destinations for Indian students for studying MBBS from abroad.


China
China has more than 6,000 Indian students pursuing medicine. The stature and quality of Chinese medical education is growing and unquestionably attracts international students from abroad. The duration of MBBS course is that of  5 years with an average fee of Rs. 160,000 to 260,000 p.a.
Russia
Russia has over 5,000 Indian students studying. Education in Russia is subsidized by the government as well which lowers the costs even further. Admissions purely on first-come-first-serve basis and no separate entrance examination further lures the students. As of now, the nation has more than 50 medical schools. The scholastic season in Russia begins in September and there are two seasons in a scholarly year-from September to January, and from February to June. The duration of MBBS course is that of 6 years with an average fee of Rs. 186,000 to 277,000 p.a.

Ukraine
Ukraine has over 5,000 Indian students pursuing medicine. Ukraine is one of the major rising study points for M.B.B.S. at affordable pricing. International students are helped with several benefits such as helping in availing loans, fellowships, part time jobs, internships and scholarships etc. The duration of M.B.B.S. course is that of 6 years with an average fee of Rs. 208,000 to 296,000 p.a.

UK

A student to be eligible for admission should obtain AAA grades with either chemistry or biology, a minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7.0 with scores not less than 6.5 in all four categories of listening, speaking, reading and writing. An aspirant should further clear the UK Clinical Aptitude test (UKCAT)/Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) covering the areas of verbal, quantitative and abstract reasoning along with decision analysis and situational judgement.

The course ranges from four to six years. On completion of two years of study, the students are required to experience a foundation training for two years. A speciality training has to be undertaken after completion of four years of study in the area one wishes to specialise, which could last up to seven years.

Australia

A quality oriented course in medical field has been developed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Minimum IELTS requirement is 7. The students are further required to qualify the Undergraduate Medicine and health Admission Test (UMAT) organised by the AQF. International applicants may also apply with Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT) or Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) scores. The minimum GAMSAT score should be at least 50 in each section, and a score of at least 50 overall.

Usually the course takes four to six years to complete followed by one year of internship and one year of residency. The speciality training is of three to eight years but is optional.

France

Universities in France are internationally known for practicing the highly renowned, age old medical tradition, teaching methodologies and state-of-art infrastructure. Unités de formation et de recherche de médecine (UFR) is the regulatory body that regulates the medical education in France. Medical education is strictly taught in the French language. One needs to register for FYHS (First Year of Health Studies) and pass the Medical Entrance Examination.

Germany

Germany is one of the most preferred destinations owing to its low course fees offering world class medical education and has been proposed as the finest medical system in the world. 5% of seats are available to the international students. Students seeking admission in Germany would have to qualify the Test for Medical Studies (TMS) meant to access the aptitude of a student. Medicine in Germany is taught in the German language.

US

The US keeping in track with the latest developments in the fields of technology and medicine offers a well structured MBBS program. The medical degree offered in the US is known as Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). MCAT test is mandatory. The applicants must have a four year Bachelor's degree in Sciences or related subjects.

The duration of the medical course in the US is of four years followed by residency training (between three to seven years).

Eligibility

  • Biology in 11th and 12th standard can opt for MBBS.
  • Earlier, a student had to obtain an essentiality certificate from the MCI for admission in any medical college outside India.The Medical Council of India (MCI) is a governmental body that focuses on the establishment and maintenance of high standards of medical education within India. However, after 2018, the students willing to study MBBS in foreign universities have to clear the NEET.

Some of the major MCI Rules for MBBS from abroad are following:

  • Any primary medical qualification confirmed by the Indian Embassy can be considered as recognized medical qualification by MCI for issuing Eligibility Certificate, entitle a candidate to appear in the Screening Test, and grant of provisional/permanent registration by the concerned State Medical Council.
  • The student must enquire about the status of the medical qualification of the university from MCI and fee structure from the Institution/University concerned.
  • Any aspirant, who has passed the qualifying examination and is desirous of pursuing MBBS has to approach MCI for issuing an Eligibility Certificate for that purpose.
  • The application form for Eligibility Certificate should be submitted with all the relevant documents including a demand draft for Rs.500/- in favour of Secretary, Medical Council of India, New Delhi.
  • No aspirant, shall be permitted to sit for the Screening Test, for the purpose of registration in India, unless he/she produces the Eligibility Certificate issued by MCI.

This application has to be made in the format mentioned by the Medical Council of India. The application has to be submitted with

  • original mark sheet or certificate of the qualifying examination
  • photocopies of the documents. In case the documents furnished by the candidate does not contain his or her birth date, then a government authorised certificate that acknowledges the same has to be produced along with by the candidate.
  • submit a Demand Draft of an amount specified by the council.
  • If an applicant belongs to any of reserved categories, have to submit a certificate stating the same.

Jobs
An M.B.B.S. graduate can think of the following career options- Anaesthetist or Anaesthesiologist, Bacteriologist,Cardiologist, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chiropodist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Dermatologist, Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Companies, Polyclinics,Private Practice, Research Institutes etc. with a general physician earning around Rs. 5.5 lacs, while a surgeon earns Rs. 7.5 lacs. Job profiles like that of specialists can easily attract around 10 to 12 lacs.
Even jobs like medical representative and chief medical officer pays around 2 to 5.7 lacs and 8 lacs per annum respectively. While, on the other hand, a paramedic earns about 2.2 lakhs to 5.3 lakhs per annum.
