Social Sciences - Admissions & Scope

Social sciences refer to the scientific study of human society and related social relationships. In simple words, it is a category of academic disciplines which is concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. The social sciences include to anthropology, archaeology, economics, history, communication studies, human geography, political science, psychology, public health, jurisprudence, linguistics, and sociology. The term may also be sometimes used to refer specifically to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century. Positivist social scientists use methods approaching those of the natural sciences as tools for understanding society, and so define science in its firmer contemporary sense. Interpretive social scientists, by contrast, may use symbolic interpretation or social critique rather than constructing empirically falsifiable theories, and thus treat science in its wider sense. In current academic practice, researchers are often diverse, using multiple methodologies (for example, by conjoining both quantitative and qualitative research). The term "social research" has also developed a degree of autonomy as practitioners from various disciplines share in its goals and means.

Social science disciplines are divisions and subdivisions of its knowledge of sub-fields imparted and researched at the college or university level. The different branches of social sciences include Anthropology, Area studies, Business studies, Civics, Communication studies, Criminology, Demography, Development studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Environmental studies, Gender studies, Geography, History, Industrial relations, Information science, Law, Library science, Linguistics, Media studies, Oceanography, Paleontology, Political science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Social work, Sustainable development, etc. Anthropology is a science of the totality of human existence, Communication studies deals with processes of human communication, Economics seeks to analyze and describe the production, distribution, and consumption of wealth, Geography is the study of all that lies above the earth's surface, History is the continuous, systematic narrative and research into past human events, Linguistics investigates the cognitive and social aspects of human language, Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes and Sociology is the systematic study of society, individuals' relationship to their societies.

Social Sciences are a field often ignored in India when it comes to quality education in terms of international standards.
