Overview

Our planet is a unique cluster of elements. It came into existence when a great number of particles came together and cooled rapidly, has been home to the weirdest creatures imaginable and houses all sorts of minerals and elements both on and inside its surface. The Earth’s supply of resources has always been one of mankind’s greatest topics of interest. The quantity and nature of the elements under the planet’s surface have long aroused the intrigue of scientists. Human tendencies dictate that our species like having control over all phenomenon that affects us in any way whatsoever. Since the advent of time, humankind has sought to gain control over the number of our resources and tried to use and twist their characteristics to its advantage. It is from this tendency that the department of petroleum engineering came about.

What is Petroleum Engineering?

Petroleum engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with the activities involved in the production and handling of crude oil and natural gas. The branch combines science with geophysical elements, applying characteristics of oil, water, and gas in high pressure so to be able to estimate the recoverable volume of a certain element in a particular reservoir. Petroleum engineers and geologists work together to determine the development and depletion of a reservoir. It involves knowledge of related branches and departments such as geophysics, formation evaluation, drilling, economics, petroleum geology, reservoir simulation, and petroleum production engineering. The branch of petroleum engineering has always been essential as human beings would require fuels to operate the various types of machinery used in day to day life from vehicles to production units. In current times, as environmental issues draw to a head and the alarming rate of the depletion of natural resources concerns organizations and governments all around the world, the branch assumes greater significance as it tackles the issue of judicial depletion of the planet’s natural reservoirs. The branch also works on efficient handling of natural fuel as it seeks to utilize completely the energy in crude oil or natural gas.

 

UG/PG degrees 

 

There are two degrees offered in the department of petroleum engineering which are an undergraduate course like  either Bachelor of Technology and a master's degree in the field as MA or M.Sc.

 

Exams required

 

The process to gain admission into these universities differ from institute to institute. Most colleges conduct entrance exams for admission while some require applicants to send in Statements of Purpose (SoPs) and Letters of Recommendation (LoRs). A few institutes consider 12th-grade marks of the students while some might conduct personal interviews either at the campus or through digital means. Most institutions settle for varying combinations of the methods. For institutes in English-speaking countries, students are required to submit their scores in exams such as SATs, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, and TOEFL.

 

Course Details

The profession of petroleum engineering requires education in the subject or in related subjects and appropriate training in the field so as to ensure that a candidate is well informed in the know-how of the department while also holding the appropriate skills and capabilities that would be crucial while working on the field. As far as education is concerned, most organizations require a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering. A degree in mechanical, chemical or civil engineering would also suffice for some organizations. Universities across the world also offer master’s degrees in the subjects and multiple universities also offer doctorates in the subject. while higher education is recommended for students planning to venture into academia, a bachelor’s is almost always enough for one to acquire a job.

Since the activities in the department are so widespread, specialization becomes essential. The extraction and management of the Earth’s resources is a continuous activity and it becomes important to divide the work in such a way that tasks are completed simultaneously. Hence, there are four types of petroleum engineers:

Reservoir engineers: They work to ensure the efficient production of oil and natural gas by taking into consideration proper placement, production rates, and enhanced oil recovery techniques. They estimate just how much a reservoir can possess.

 

Drilling engineers: These engineers work on the technical aspects of the processes involved like drilling production, exploratory and injection wells. They are involved both in drilling into new surfaces and extracting resources from old, used wells.

 

Completion engineers: This type of engineers, also known as subsurface engineers, is involved in designing and supervising the implementation of techniques to the effect that wells are drilled and maintained in the absolutely correct and stable way so as to ensure that production of oil is done efficiently.

 

Production engineers: Production engineers are involved in the management of the interface between the reservoir and the well; in the evaluation of artificial lift methods and in the analysis and selection of equipment that is required to separate the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water). In managing the interface, they handle perforations, downhole flow control, sand control, and downhole monitoring equipment.

Requirements & Eligibility Level wise

Reservoir Engineering

The objective of engineering is optimization. To obtain optimum profit from a field engineer or the engineering team must identify and define all individual reservoirs and their physical properties, deduce each reservoir's performance, prevent drilling of unnecessary wells, initiate operating controls at the proper time, and consider all important economic factors, including income taxes. 

To make the students estimate how much oil or gas can be recovered from underground deposits, known as reservoirs. They study reservoirs' characteristics and determine which methods will get the most oil or gas out of the reservoirs. They also monitor operations to ensure that optimal levels of these resources are being recovered.

 

Career Scope

Employment of petroleum engineers is projected to grow 15 percent over the next ten years, much faster than the average for all occupations. However, because it is a small occupation, the fast growth will result in only about 4,900 new jobs over the 10-year period.

 

Oil prices will be a major determinant of employment growth. Because many petroleum engineers work in oil and gas extraction, any changes in oil prices will likely affect employment levels. Higher prices can cause oil and gas companies to increase capital investment in new facilities and expand existing production operations.
