Living Expenses and Part-time Jobs

The prime reason for Australia being popular among Indian (International) students is due to the exceptional quality of education and also because of stay-back and immigration features. It offers some of the best undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the world, but also potentially high living costs one needs to be aware of.

The Australian Government specifies AU$20,290 as the minimum amount required to cover living costs for one year. This figure excludes tuition fees or the cost of travel to and from the country. The average tuition fee for international undergraduate students is AU$30,840 per annum, whereas, for international postgraduate students, the average tuition fee is AU$31,596.

Generally, the cheaper the cost the further away from the city you will be, the more people you'll be living with, or the more rundown the accommodation will be. Expenses also vary depending on the city in which one chooses to study, with Sydney being more expensive, while Adelaide and Canberra are generally less costly.

International students in Australia are allowed to work up to 40 hours a fortnight during the university semester study periods and full-time during the vacation period. Following are the most popular part-time jobs that a student can take up at Australian universities:

  • Hospitality (working in cinemas, restaurants, bars, hotels, takeaway food stores, and sporting venues)

Overview

Fine arts generally refers to the art form that is basically created for its beauty or the aesthetic or the intellectual value in contrast to its functional or practical or utilitarian value. It is something that derives its value from the abstract definition of art and is not defined by its beauty. Fine arts deals with creating art forms that convey some meaning or idea or an emotion. The field of fine arts initially included drawings, paintings, sculptures, music, poetry, and architecture. But over the years, with technological improvements, especially in the field of digitalization, the field expanded to include photography, printmaking, video making and editing, design, conceptual art, and sequential art. The field of fine arts is different from conceptual art. The field requires that the person undertaking the Fine Arts stream has immense passion and interest, apart from a spec of inborn talent, in the particular art in order to become a successful artist.

Prior to the eighteenth century, there was a traditional system of arts that existed in Western countries. In that system, the artwork was considered a skilled piece of work. The word ‘Art’ in those days meant the same as that of ‘Techne’ in Greek or ‘Skill’ in English. Fine arts varied between cultures of Japanese, Chinese and Latin American as well. An important source of information about the history of fine arts is probably from literary sources such as Larry Shiner The Invention of Art: A Cultural History (2003), which locates invention in the eighteenth century. Great personalities of the past like Paul Oskar Kristeller, who was a scholar of Renaissance Humanism,  Pierre Bourdieu, the French Sociologist and Anthropologist, and Terry Eagleton, the British literary Theorist have contributed and shared ideas on Fine arts.

UG/PG degrees

There are two degrees offered in the department of Fine Arts which are an undergraduate course like either Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) and a master’s degree in the field as MA or M.Sc.

Exams required

Normally to study Fine Arts abroad, the student is needed to produce their IELTS score or TOEFL score. These are language test and are very important if one wishes to study abroad as it checks the language proficiency of the student.

Scope of Fine Arts

Fine arts can be often used as a synonym for creativity. The broad spectrum of fine arts includes film, drama, dance, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, etc. which involves great skill. It is a combination of visual arts and sometimes performing arts as well. As is evident from the above, it is a professional artist that Fine arts education delivers to any society. Fine arts often provide rewarding careers but a great extent of uncertainty does exist. Moreover, artists work as freelancers and on-demand basis and their remuneration depend upon their talent and popularity.

Course Details

Similar to the domestic programs in Fine arts, the courses are of the undergraduate, postgraduate and research level abroad. In the undergraduate or Bachelor’s degree programs, the student is trained in the basic skills of the art and is gradually moulded to a fine artist. Generally, the Bachelor’s level programs are of a duration of three or four years.

There are also various Postgraduate, that is, Master’s level programs being offered in the subject which often culminate in research and internship opportunities. The Master’s level study programs generally range from one to two years of duration. It takes a great privilege to complete Doctoral programs offered by even some of the world-class universities and such students find demanding careers as well. Apart from the mentioned degree programs, there is no dearth of short-term diploma courses in the field of Fine-Arts. In fact these diploma courses are more preferred generally for a person who is already a graduate in the discipline. Another supportive argument is the comparatively smaller cost and duration of the diploma or certificate courses.
