About Education

From of the advent of our planet’s existence as a heated bundle of elements and gases to its current position as possibly the only planet in the galaxy with life, the species that have traversed its vast plane of existence have one factor in common – imparting knowledge onto to younglings so as to ensure further survival of their respective species. Whether it’s the mother elephant teaching her daughter direction, or lions teaching their cubs to hunt, species for long have been known for their tendencies to teach the younger generation, not just to maintain a base of knowledge but also to bring about additions to the knowledge through the younger generation’s own experiences and insights. This primal instinct is what contributed to the idea of education as we know it.

What is Education

Education is defined as the process of facilitating learning and fostering the acquisition of skills, beliefs, knowledge, and values. It has transformed greatly from what was a base, primal survival instinct to an absolutely essential, and prized, characteristic. A learned person is often referred to, in layman’s terms, a person with an education. In current times, an education is mostly considered the absolute minimum any adult must possess before trying to earn a livelihood. Historically, education has perpetually been known as the weapon of the masses, with Plato founding the Academy in Athens, the first institute of higher education in Europe. Confucius, of China, spread his teachings, philosophies, principles, beliefs and perspectives throughout the country, with the reverence the public held him with taking the knowledge across borders. Even now, countries like China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam follow his principles in their governance. Most countries’ constitutions preach a Right To education, an act that makes a certain level of schooling compulsory for all children of the country, effectively deeming it the government’s responsibility to avail education to those who cannot afford it for themselves.

Types of Education

Education is a wide-ranged activity. It is divided into various types depending upon a number of criteria:

  1. Teaching method
  2. Teaching environment
  3. Curriculum
  4. Understanding capacity of students

It is important to note that an individual, throughout the course of his or her life, may undergo more than one type of education. In addition to this, it is also of paramount importance to note that education is not meant to be meted out to just children. Education is an asset that could be put into use at all stages of life, the reason why so many countries across the world are home to adult education centers. The different types of education are listed:

  1. Formal education: The most common type of education, formal education is defined and characterized by the structure. It occurs in a planned environment and in the presence of a few pre-established norms such as the curriculum, methods of assessment, class size, etc. It features a classroom of students interacting and communicating with a trained, certified teacher who has been formally accredited for their expertise in the subject concerned. The range of formal education is further sub-divided into further categories taking into context the level at which it is being meted out:
  1. Preschool
  2. Primary
  3. Secondary
  4. Tertiary
  5. Vocational
  6. Special
  1. Alternative Education: Rising primarily as a response to the shortcomings of formal education, alternative education is defined as any education that does not adhere to the conventions of formal education. It comprises of concepts like self-education and home education.
  2. Indigenous Education: The history of our world is rife with the evils and ill-effects of colonization to the extent that myriads of indigenous skills, values, principles and bits of knowledge have been buried under oppression. This branch of education seeks to recognize the fact and correct the wrongdoings by fusing indigenous knowledge with formal and informal education.
  3. Informal Learning: This particular branch of education focuses on enhancing the skill-set of the student by triggering his or her interest. It’s an extremely dynamic branch as it can easily coexist with and within many different other types.
  4. Self-directed learning: It is a basic assumption that nobody knows one as well as one does oneself. A person might usually hold a superior judgment of his or capabilities and shortcomings, making it easy for him or her to teach themselves.
  5. Open education and Electronic Technology: Open education is the sort of education that does not define itself according to any of the conventions of classroom-based, attendance-driven education. In addition to this, the rise of technology has made online education an extremely popular and sought-after form of education.

Curriculum and Degrees in Education

Education is an extremely popular choice for students all around the world owing to the nobility of the area. Education as a subject is taught in major universities across the world:

  1. Stanford University, United States of America
  2. Harvard University, United States of America
  3. University of Oxford, United Kingdom
  4. University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
  5. University of California - Berkeley, United States of America

Developed countries hold the advantage of access to better technology over developing countries which explains their popularity among students all over the world. Although the subject matter differs on the basis of university, region and such factors, all education programs hold common topics such as child psychology, teaching techniques and such. Education in the field of education is meted out at all levels – bachelors’, masters’ and doctorates. The degree a student receives at the bachelors’ level is a Bachelors’ of Education (B. Ed). Multiple countries also require a certificate from a training institute.

Careers

There are various careers that one could pursue in the field of education:

  1. Teacher
  2. Tutor
  3. Principal
  4. College administration

The branch of education is dynamic and constantly growing as the field has to consistently take into stride world developments and infuse their effects into the knowledge that is being meted out. Thus, it is of little doubt that its value as a field of study and a job prospect is perpetually on the rise.
