About B.P.T. (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)

Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy is the application of physical methods to treat and heal different parts of the body. It is considered one of the oldest professions for curing various physical ailments. It has evolved from a simple massage to a complex medley of therapies helping to improve the movement of dysfunctional body parts such as arms and legs through physical means.

With the increase in musculoskeletal problems due to the rigorous lifestyle of humans, the demand for Physiotherapist has also increased. Making a career in Physiotherapy is a wise decision as the scope is widening and expected to offer numerous job prospects. Hence, one must have a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy and the intricacies of bones, muscles, and nerves. BPT or Bachelor of Physiotherapy is a practical oriented 4-year course and 6 months internship program which enables a person to practice physiotherapy as a qualified practitioner.

The salary of a physiotherapist ranges from $40,000-$100,000 per annum and that in the gulf ranges from $30,000-$72,000 per annum. On an average, a fresher can earn up to 56,200 USD per annum, and with a few years of experience up to 113,340 USD per annum.

Some of the prerequisites for getting admission into UK universities are-

  • Typical International Baccalaureate requirements: 32 points.
  • A-levels requirements: ABB with either biological science or physical education.
  • IELTS requirements: 6.5 band overall, with no band lower than 6.0.

Singapore

The Discipline has also been involved in extensive negotiations with the Singapore Institute of Technology developing a one-year course leading to a degree in Physiotherapy for students with a three-year diploma in Physiotherapy in Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore. The Honours Degree in Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy which is jointly developed by Singapore Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin is also provided.

A good pass in two of the following H2 subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and also General Paper (GP) or Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) while satisfying the Mother Tongue (MTL) requirements are some of the requirements available to an outsider.

For Singaporeans there is a Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) which further helps and supports to get training. Funding is also provided by WSG, the Ministry of Health and a co-sponsoring company for successful candidates to undergo the 4-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physiotherapy at Singapore Institute of Technology. The PCP-PT is a career conversion programme under the Healthcare PCP program offered by WSG, along with MOH, and supported by MOH Holdings.

Many short-term diplomas and courses are also provided by various Universities. For e.g.- The one-year course awarded by Nanyang Polytechnic aims to upgrade the Diploma in Physiotherapy to a degree level. The main objective is to develop knowledge and skills in critical analysis, global health and those related to the profession i.e. advanced physiotherapy practice, advanced exercise prescription and leadership and management. The aspiration is that this course will produce independent practitioners who can initiate, drive and evaluate the services required for the future health system in Singapore.

In Singapore, in the public healthcare sector, the annual starting salary is around $47,100 for Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Diagnostic Radiographers at the degree level.

New Zealand

To become a physio, in New Zealand one will need to study a health science-based four-year degree from either Auckland University of Technology: School of Physiotherapy or University of Otago: School of Physiotherapy as these are the only two universities providing any degree in Physiotherapy.

The Otago Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPhty) degree is a course of the duration of four years. It is internationally renowned as the graduates are amongst the best in the field.

The pay for physiotherapists can be variable depending on the experience, duties and employer. At district health boards: a fresher earns about $45,000 a year, they can progress in yearly steps to about $62,000 a year, with extra duties and responsibilities, they can earn from $67,000 to $88,000 a year.

Job Prospects and Future Opportunities

After completing BPT one can also think about higher education like M.PT or Ph.D. to specialize in one of the many specialties like Orthopedics, Sports, Neurology, Pediatrics etc.

A job is usually insured after a degree in Physiotherapy. One can work in a hospital, physiotherapy clinic or can start independent clinic. One can work with the ministry of sports, stadium, hospitals, health societies etc. Physiotherapy is in its growing phase. However, it is anticipated that with increasing knowledge and high standards of living, in the next five years demand of specialized physiotherapist will increase. We can expect a lot of centers where only a specialty is taken care of. Like Centre for neuro rehabilitation, ortho related injuries, sports physiotherapy, women health, etc. So, one can guess this is going to be one of the strongest professions in near future.
