About M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts)

The degree in Master of Fine Arts after bachelor’s would allow students to study subjects like graphic design, creative writing, filmmaking, dance and theater at master’s level.  During most of the degrees in Master of Fine Arts, coursework is mostly of performing or an applied nature, along with your final assessment which would bring out what you have learned. The presentation and content of the course would vary and would vary on the specialization you have taken. Generally students graduated in fine arts typically follow one among the two paths:

1. MA and PhD.

The main reason behind this is that these courses are designed according to career option of the given field. The students who opt for the MA and PhD generally want to write and study about art and would teach others about its principles and history. On the other hand, the MFA degree is mainly for those who want to practice the art want to teach others how to dance, paint, act, sculpt, etc.

2. Master of Fine Arts Degree:

The MFA is the highest degree student can earn. This degree focuses on practicing fields within the arts like graphic design, dancing, lighting design, drawing, scenic design, acting, costume design and painting. The curriculum may also include research and hence give creative output. Because of all the above activity the students would  engaged with the coursework and the same to others.

An MFA degree is an intensive discipline which will focus on independent art making . You will be introduced to a world of studio based learning, focusing heavily on dialectics of  contemporary art and  history, while working with artists to learn more about the field. Students are required to create exhibits or maintain a portfolio of their work at the end of their programme.

Eligibility
Students applying to Master of Fine arts programme abroad need to prove their academic excellence in this field. A  bachelor's degree in fine arts or art history with first class class honours is required, Students also need to submit their portfolio of artistic work. Letters of recommendations is also mandatory to gain admission in this course. In USA, colleges offering this degree will also conduct interviews after reviewing your application. To have an edge, it is recommended for students to have showcased or published their work outside prior to the admission. Lastly, an English language requirement is there if you are applying for MFA outside India.

Admission process
For students going to USA for MFA, they need to give the GRE examination. After they obtain their GRE scores, they have to apply and send your statement of purpose, official transcripts along with 3 letters of recommendations. Along with this your creative portfolio of showcased and published work must be sent with your written application. In UK, the pattern of admission is similar without the need of GRE. The last step in the admission process is the interview.

Syllabus and Course Description

Courses on MFA or Master of Fine Arts cost about  Rs 15-20 lakhs in UK, while in India, it awarded as a diploma where the fee ranges from  Rs 1- 4 lakhs. The course syllabus puts an emphasis on building the knowledge of the students on  history, aesthetics, and art education. Often this happens through both classroom tutorials along with working with the artists associated with the art field.

The curriculum of MFA includes lectures from art institutes and museum. It also includes modules on art appreciation and art history., making the MFA degree an interdisciplinary programme. Along with this, universities abroad tend to have weekly or monthly studio work  for the MFA degree. In USA, the syllabus includes core modules which emphasizes on :

  1. Survey of Modern and Contemporary Art 
  2. Contemporary art appreciation
  3. History of modern art
  4. Renaissance
  5.  Principles of Photography
  6. Introduction to poetry writing
  7. Principles of film writing
  8. Introduction to theatre

The core modules are spread for the two years. Students are recommended to also take up interdisciplinary subjects for electives along with the core modules.

Students of MFA also have to showcase their work in students exhibits and submit their documentation or portfolio of written or artistic work.

4. Cornell University- This University mainly offers two types of MFAs, One in visual arts and the other in writing.
