The University of Melbourne is a public research university that was established in 1853, by Hugh Childers. Hugh Childers was the then finance minister and Auditor general. He has set aside an amount of 10,000 pounds for the establishment of the university. The minister gave the proposal for the establishment of the university in his first Budget speech, on the 4th of November 1852. The foundation stone was laid on 3rd July 1854 and the first class was conducted in 1855 with 16 students and 3 professors. Out of the 16 students, only 4 students had graduated.

2. Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
It was founded in the year 1887 in Melbourne. It got awarded as Royal Patronage by Queen Elizabeth II in the year 1954. It gets admissions for around 87,000 students every year.
