The California State University system was established in 1960 as part of the California Master Plan for Higher Education and is a direct descendent of the 1857-founded California State Normal Schools. The CSU is the country's largest generator of bachelor's degrees, with about 100,000 graduates each year. The university system supports more than 150,000 employees in the state, with yearly expenditures totalling more than $17 billion.
