About Columbia University
This university was formerly known as King's University, Columbia University was established in 1754. It is New York’s oldest research university that provides its students with a unique learning environment. Over 25,000 students are a part of the institution. Scholarships are made available to undergraduate students by the college committee. The university’s alumni include Olympic medallists, Nobel laureates, and other award winners.
Columbia University Campus
The university has one main campus with many locations inside it. The majority of postgraduate and undergraduate classes occur in Morning Side Heights. The Butler Library is the most extensive library in Columbia University Library System is one of the most significant buildings on the campus. Recently in April 2007, Columbia University has purchased 17 acres of land for its business school, international and public affairs school, etc. The name of this new campus in Manhattanville, and it is approved by New York State Public Authorities Control Board.

The acceptance rate of the university is below average. It is around 5.5% to 7%, which is recorded as a deficient value. In 2018 about 40,203 students had applied to Columbia University, and 2,214 students were admitted. It is seen that Columbia University is the 3rd most selective college in the United States after Stanford and Harvard. In the list of Ivy League colleges, this university is the 2nd most selective university.
Columbia University Students
The university has a diverse culture when it comes to students and the teaching staff. It is home to many families, sororities, and co-educational Greek organizations. There are many student media publications released by the students. Columbia University also has a vast number of club organizations in which students can take part and portray their skills. The international students get a unique opportunity to blend in with foreign culture and study as well. There are four councils of students, namely InterGreek, Interfraternity, PanHellenic, Multicultural Greek councils.
Columbia University Faculty
Trustees established the university senate after a referendum in 1969. It is a unicameral body of 107 members from all constituencies of the university. It includes president of the university, deans of Columbia College, etc. This senate was succeeded in power from the University Council, which was created in 1890. Overall the faculty is very supportive and educated.
Columbia University Achievements and Rewards
In the year 1996 to 2008, around 18 Columbia students and faculty have won Nobel Prizes, out of which 9 are faculty members. Other awards which are won by the university is 30 MacArthur Foundation award winners, 4 National Medal of Science recipients, 38 Institute of Medicine of the National Academies Award recipients 20 National Academy of Engineering Award winners, 43 National Academy of Sciences Award winners, and 143 American Academy of Arts and Sciences Award winners. In 2015 it was ranked 1st in the state by average professor salaries. In 1983, Columbia men’s soccer scored 18 – 0 and was ranked first in the nation. Columbia crew won the famed Henley Royal Regatta, which was a big victory.
