Dalhousie University is a world leader in ocean research and education. This University is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is one of the friendliest cities in the world. About Dalhousie University

History

Founded in 1818, Dalhousie is one of Canada’s oldest universities, attracting more than 18,200+ students from around the world. Dalhousie University is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is ranked as one of the friendliest cities in the world. Dalhousie University has three campuses namely   Studley Campus, Carleton Campus, Sexton Campus and the Agricultural Campus. The first three campuses are located in within the Halifax Peninsula whereas the fourth, the Agricultural Campus is located in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.  

Overview

The university provides transformative academic programs along with pioneering research on Canada’s East Coast. Though the college was founded in 1818 it was conferred University Powers in 1841 by the Act of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. When it's awarded its first degree in 1866 it had 28 students working towards degrees and 28 occasional students. The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Computer Science was created in 1997 after an amalgamation with the Technical University of Nova Scotia. In 2012 the Nova Scotia Agricultural College also merged with this University to create a new Faculty of agriculture. The University has libraries, museums, 5 restaurants and 10 student residences within its campus.

Admission Procedures

How to Apply

Applicants are required to have completed Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 70% in 5 academic grade 12 courses. For Indian subcontinent students, it may not be required to give proof of English Language proficiency if:

  • One has studied at an English language institution for at least 3 years at the secondary level
  • One has studied at an English language institution for at least one year at the post-secondary level.

If the above criteria are not fulfilled one has to achieve a minimum score or above on a recognized English Language proficiency test which includes TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL, CanTEST, Pearson Test of English – Academic, Cambridge English: Advanced as given in its official website. 

For applying for a Master's degree a four year Bachelor’s degree, minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of study and degree granted by university of recognized standing is required.

  • Identify the location of the campus, university and the stream of your interest 
  • Fill up the application form in the official website
  • Apply for scholarships
  • Take various required English proficiency and entrance tests
  • Arrange and prepare the essays and recommendation letters with SOPs
  • Report your test scores to the university

Life at Dalhousie University

Student Life

At Dalhousie, there are more than 200 student organizations, clubs and societies covering a wide range of interests such as academics, recreation, social, cultural and religious issues. The university also has its own student newspaper called The Dalhousie Gazette. The campus has 5 restaurants, gymnasiums, large swimming pools and open grounds.

  • The campus has five athletics facilities. 
  • They have a sports team for individuals to participate in different sports. The sports teams are called the Tigers 
  • It also hosts a Society Fair every year in which all societies display their efforts and recruit new members
  • Dal After Dark is organized on every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights 

International Students

At Dalhousie, there are a large number of societies and clubs in which students from any part of the world can join. Dal’s intramural program provides something for every student. Students can go to Dalplex, which is the largest fitness and recreational facility. Dalhousie has a strong alumni network all across the globe. There is something for everyone, a club for every interest and if anyone is not able to find a club they can start their own club.

Accommodation Details

Campus accommodation is available for students in Halifax and at the Agricultural campus. There is guaranteed accommodation for all first-year undergraduate students. Students can choose between traditional dormitory-style residences or non-traditional apartments. They also have the choice for a single room or double bedroom.

Cost of Living in the Vicinity

As already mentioned, Halifax, Nova Scotia is one of the world's friendliest cities. There is a lot to discover from the port city of Halifax to the beautiful town of Truro.  

  • Along with being the capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is the commercial hub of Canada's Maritime provinces. 
  • Point Pleasant Park is a beautiful park to take a walk around. 
  • Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, built in 1856, is a great example of the British fort.
