Microbes as a way to silence pain
Anthrax, a scary microbe often causing dreadful lung infections has some unexpected potential. Recent studies reveal that it releases certain toxins that can silence multiple types of pain in animals. This toxin works by changing the signaling in the pain-sensing neurons. When it is delivered in a targeted manner, straight into the CNS and the PNS neurons, they are capable o offering relief to the animals in distress.
This bacterial toxin can also be combined with various molecular cargo as precision-targeted pain treatments. These can act on pain receptors without causing widespread side effects.
But this approach is purely experimental and still needs fine-tuning.
