Pennsylvania State University is also commonly referred to as Penn State. The university was established in the year 1855. It is a state-owned university, with campuses and facilities around Pennsylvania. It is very active in conducting research, public services, and teaching. It includes an instructional mission involving undergraduate, graduate, and professional education offered both through online delivery and resident instruction.

PSU has 24 campuses spread throughout the states. The main campus is called University Park, which is situated in State College borough and College Township in Center County. The other 19 campuses are spread throughout the state are called Commonwealth campuses, and they offer admissions to undergraduate students. The university has Special Missions campus, namely Dickinson Law, Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies, Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania College of Technology. In the recent year of 1998, Penn State started the concept of online learning, and it is called as World Campus.

University Park Campus has around 864 student organizations, as recorded in 2014. Some of the additional organizations the university recognizes are Lion’s Pantry, Apollo, Boulevard, and Anime Organization. Every February, thousands of students participate in THON, students performed for 48 hours nonstop and also performed a line dance for at least every hour to stay alert. University Park Campus publishes Onward State, the world’s most-read student-run news website. University Park Campus also has a student government that co-ordinates with various student organizations, hosting of events, etc.

The University Faculty Senate of Penn State is the main representative body of Penn State’s faculty. It has legislative authority on all issues regarding educational interests that is important to the faculties of more than one college. The graduate council consists of faculty members who look after the interests of the graduates. They include a dominant force in maintaining scholars and intellectual achievement of the university community. They also generate graduate policies for the smooth running of graduate programs and research in the university.

 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education says that PSU has a high rate of research activity; over 70,000 degrees have been awarded since 1922. The Applied Research Lab (ARL), situated nearby University Park campus, has been a research associate with the United States Department of Defence since 1945. They conduct research focusing on the support of the United States Navy. PSU is also a part of BTAA (Big Ten Academic Alliance), which focuses on spreading awareness about medicine, technology, agriculture, etc. The PSU Library is ranked 14th among research libraries in the 2003 – 2004 survey published by The Chronicles of Higher Education.
