The University of Bristol, located in Bristol, England, is a red brick Russell Group research university. It received a royal charter in 1909, although its roots may be traced back to a Merchant Venturers' school founded in 1595 and to University College, Bristol, which had been in operation since 1876. Bristol is a member of the Coimbra Group of European schools, Russell Group of research-intensive British universities, and the Worldwide Universities Network. The former vice-chancellor, Eric Thomas, served as chairman from 2005 to 2007. Furthermore, the University is an Erasmus Charter signatory, sending around 500 students to European partner universities each year.
Bristol does not have a central campus; instead, it is dispersed throughout. The majority of its operations, on the other hand, are concentrated in the city center's "University Precinct." The Avon Gorge, originally owned by George Oatley, is one of the residential halls on campus. After getting funding from the UGC, the institution constructed some new structures. The new structures were designed and built by Ralph Brentnall. The music department has a British feel to it.
