The University of Western Ontario (UWO) is a Canadian public research university located in London. Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron established the Western University in London, Ontario, on March 7, 1878. Western is a co-educational institution with about 24,000 students and a global alumni base of over 306,000. In 1908, the university became non-denominational. Since 1919, the university has had affiliations with several denominational colleges. In the post-World War II era, the university expanded significantly, adding several faculties and institutions.
