About University Of Western Sydney

The University of Western Sydney started its operations from 1st January 1989, under the terms of the University Act passed by the New South Wales Parliament of Australia in December 1988. Western Sydney University is an institution which is research focused to create an impact, with practical outcomes and outstanding methods to deal with the problems.  The New South Wales Labor government in 1987 planned to change the name of the university as Chifley University on the name of former Labor Prime Minister but liberal government reversed this decision in 1989 and controversially named the institution like the University of Western Sydney.

It is a multi-campus university in the Western region of Sydney. There are three types of degrees awarded- undergraduate, postgraduate and higher research degrees. Macarthur Institute of Higher Education was affiliated with the university in 1989. The University of Western Sydney, in 1921 was restructured as a single multi-campus institute rather than as a federation. In 2015, the university again underwent a restructuring which leads to the change in name from the University of Western Sydney to Western Sydney University.
