Two of the biggest study destinations for Indian students have tightened. Canada cut the number of new study permits for 2026, and a US rule on how long F-1 students can stay is in court. This guide does not repeat our country-by-country comparison. It helps you choose by your own situation: your level of study, budget and plan after graduating.
- Canada's 2026 study permit target is 408,000 in total, with 155,000 for new arrivals, about 49 percent fewer new arrivals than in 2025
- Master's and doctoral students at public universities no longer need a provincial attestation letter from 1 January 2026
- A US court postponed the F-1 duration of status rule on 14 September 2026, and DHS has appealed

What Changed in the US and Canada for 2026?
Canada set 155,000 new study permits for 2026, about 49 percent fewer new arrivals than in 2025, and most undergraduate applicants still need a provincial attestation letter. In the US, a rule to give F-1 students a fixed stay was postponed by a federal court on 14 September 2026, and DHS has appealed.
Neither country has closed its doors. Canada still welcomes master's and doctoral students without an attestation letter at public universities, and F-1 students are still admitted for duration of status today. The risk is uncertainty, so plan a second option.
Canada Study Permit Cap 2026: What Indian Students Should DoRead →Which Countries Suit Master's Students Best After the Crackdowns?
For master's study, Ireland, Germany and Australia are strong options. Ireland gives master's graduates up to 24 months of stay-back. Germany needs a blocked account of 11,904 euros for 2026 and German for many jobs. Australia lists the Student visa from AUD 2,500, and the Graduate visa usually lasts 2 to 3 years.
Canada also remains workable for master's applicants because they do not need an attestation letter at public universities. Compare each option on total cost, post-study time and how long the visa takes, not on one headline.
Ireland for Indian Students 2026: Growth, Caps and RulesRead →Which Countries Suit Undergraduate Students and Diploma Applicants?
Undergraduate and diploma applicants have fewer easy choices, because Canada still asks most of them for an attestation letter. Ask each Canadian college about its allocation before you apply. Keep a second country ready, such as Australia, Ireland or the UK, and compare their costs and rules before you pay any deposit.
The UK Graduate visa shortens to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, so it is worth comparing the UK with the other options on post-study time rather than assuming it is the safe choice.

Choose by three tests: can you afford the total cost, does the visa let you work and stay after study, and does the country welcome your level of study. Keep a backup country, check official sites before paying a deposit, and avoid choosing from one video or headline.
