Getting an engineering job in the UK after a master's is possible, but for most Indian graduates it is slow and full of rejections. On our channel, Study Abroad with Piyush, we met a University of Leeds alumnus from Bangalore who studied embedded systems, graduated in 2024 and now works as an embedded systems engineer. He told us it took four to five months and a long run of rejections. This guide uses his story and the visa rules, checked on 26 October 2026, to set out a realistic plan.

📌
Verified 2026 Updates:
  • The Graduate visa lasts two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, according to GOV.UK
  • To stay longer, most graduates need a Skilled Worker visa
  • GOV.UK gives a general salary minimum of 41,700 pounds a year, or the going rate if higher, with lower rates from 33,400 pounds for some new entrants.

How Hard Is It to Get a UK Engineering Job After Masters?

⚡ Quick Answer

It is hard but realistic if you plan for it. The Leeds graduate we interviewed said it took him four to five months after finishing his course, with many rejections along the way. Expect a long search, apply widely, and use your Graduate visa time to build experience rather than waiting for one perfect role.

He described waking up to rejection emails and getting used to them over time. He applied to so many roles that some employers called him and he had to remember whether he had applied. That volume is normal. Graduates who treat the job search as a daily routine, with a target number of tailored applications a week, tend to keep going long enough to get an offer.

His first role was not his dream role. He joined a fire suppression and safety equipment company in production, and after about six months the company moved him to research and development. Starting in a related role and moving inside the company is a common route, and it still builds the UK experience that later employers and sponsors look for.

Which Job Sites Work Best for Engineering Graduates?

⚡ Quick Answer

Our Leeds graduate found his job on Indeed and said Indeed employers replied faster than those on LinkedIn. He used LinkedIn mainly to build his profile so employers could see his skills. Use both, plus your university careers service and company websites, and check that an employer can sponsor a visa before you invest time.

For engineering, many smaller firms recruit through general job boards and agencies, not only through graduate schemes. That suits international graduates, because graduate schemes often close early in the academic year. Keep a simple tracker of each application, the date, the role and the contact, so you can follow up and avoid confusion when an employer calls.

If you will need sponsorship later, check the employer on the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors before you apply. A company that is not on the register cannot sponsor a Skilled Worker visa, although you can still work for it on a Graduate visa and gain experience.

How Should You Tailor Your CV for UK Engineering Jobs?

⚡ Quick Answer

Rewrite your CV for each job description. Our Leeds graduate said some employers use automated screening that searches for keywords, so match the skills and tools named in the advert. He used the University of Leeds CV checker to improve his CV. Most UK universities offer a similar careers service to students and recent graduates.

A UK engineering CV is usually two pages, starts with a short profile, and lists projects with what you did and the result. Name the tools, languages and standards the advert asks for, such as specific microcontrollers, programming languages or design software, but only if you can discuss them in an interview.

He also used ChatGPT to get started, but warned against relying on it so much that your application reads as machine-written or that you stop thinking for yourself. Use AI tools for a first draft or for checking grammar, then rewrite in your own words.

What Do UK Engineering Employers Look For?

⚡ Quick Answer

Skills first. Our Leeds graduate said his employer cared about his skills, not which university he attended. For embedded systems, that meant programming and electronics. Read job descriptions early, note the skills that keep appearing, and build them through modules, projects and online learning before and during your course.

His advice to students is to look at the course modules as soon as you get an offer letter and start on the basics before you arrive. That gives you more time during the course to work on projects that you can show employers. Free resources such as YouTube tutorials can help you start, as he pointed out.

Soft skills matter too. Employers want to hear how you worked in a team, handled a problem or learned something quickly. Prepare short examples from your projects and any work experience, using a clear structure of situation, action and result.

What Is the Interview Process Like for Engineering Roles?

⚡ Quick Answer

Expect more than one stage. Our Leeds graduate had a general interview of about an hour about his experience, followed by an online technical interview with programming and electronics questions and tasks. He also had a face-to-face stage. Practise explaining your projects and solving technical problems out loud before you apply.

Technical rounds for engineering roles can include coding tasks, circuit or design questions, and questions about your own projects. Revise the fundamentals of your field, not only your dissertation topic. If you are asked something you do not know, explain how you would find the answer, because employers value a clear thought process.

Location matters less than many students think. He studied in Leeds and found work in York, and our host noted that students can look across the country. Being willing to move widens the number of roles you can apply for.

UK Skilled Worker Visa 2026: Salary Rules for GraduatesRead →
⚡ Quick Answer

The Graduate visa lets you work without a sponsor for two years if you apply by 31 December 2026, or 18 months from 1 January 2027. To stay longer you usually need a Skilled Worker visa, which needs a licensed sponsor and a salary of at least 41,700 pounds or the going rate.

UK visa rules 2026What GOV.UK saysWhy it matters
Graduate visa length2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027Time to find work without a sponsor
Skilled Worker general salaryAt least 41,700 pounds a year or the going rate, if higherMost graduate jobs must meet this
Lower rate for some new entrants70 percent of the going rate, at least 33,400 poundsCan apply if you are under 26 or switching from a Student or Graduate visa
New entrant time limitTotal stay of up to 4 years, including Graduate visa timePlan your next step early

GOV.UK says the lower new entrant rate can apply if you are under 26, on or recently on a Student visa at bachelor's level or above, or on or recently on a Graduate visa. Your total stay on these rates, including Graduate visa time, cannot be more than four years. Ask your employer which occupation code and salary rate your role uses.

Because the Graduate visa becomes shorter from 2027, students starting now have less time to find a sponsoring job. Start applying during your course, not after it.

⚡ Quick Answer

Expect rejection and plan for it. A student we interviewed told us to think twice before coming, to be ready to handle everything yourself, and to be mentally strong. Set a weekly routine, keep a small savings buffer, talk to friends and family, and treat each rejection as feedback rather than a verdict.

Many Indian students come from a system with more structure and support. In the UK you manage your own job search, finances and daily life. That independence is part of the experience, but it can feel isolating. Join university societies, use the wellbeing service if you need it, and keep in touch with others who are job hunting so you can share leads.
