Most Indian students come to the UK hoping to turn a degree into a job. This playbook draws on conversations with students at Liverpool, Coventry University London, Hertfordshire and Leeds, recorded for AdmitKard's Study Abroad with Piyush channel in 2026, and checks visa rules against GOV.UK in October 2026.
- The Graduate visa lasts 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027 (two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026), with a 937 pound fee
- For the Skilled Worker visa, GOV.UK lists a general minimum salary of 41,700 pounds or the job's going rate, and the job must be on the eligible occupations list (checked October 2026).
Is It Realistic to Get a Job in the UK After Graduation?
It is possible but competitive, and students told us to expect a long search. A Liverpool digital marketing graduate has applied since February without reaching a final round. A Leeds student said you need to be in the top 5 percent. Others did reach interviews because of earlier work experience.
The graduate with two internships described the search as draining but kept going. A computer science master's student with six years of experience at Oracle reached third-round interviews, though two employers asked him to return later because of visa restrictions during his course. The Hertfordshire students added that most placement jobs are aimed at undergraduates, with fewer for postgraduates.

Start in your first term. Two Hertfordshire master's students on a placement route said you must begin searching in year one, not year two, because placements and internships are competitive. They advised building connections, networking and skills from the first weeks, and being open to almost any work while you search.
| Step (checked Oct 2026) | When | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pick a focused course | Before you apply | Choose one specialism and an industry and city to target, not a mix of everything. |
| 2. Get set up | First weeks | Get your National Insurance number and meet the careers service. |
| 3. Build UK experience | Year one | Apply for internships, volunteering or a part-time job linked to your field. |
| 4. Use events | Every term | Go to career fairs and alumni events and hand out your CV. |
| 5. Apply in the hiring windows | Jan to May, Sep to Oct, Dec | Apply on Indeed, LinkedIn and your university's job platform. |
| 6. Plan your visa | Final term | Apply for the Graduate visa and look for sponsors. |
The computer science student's advice was to have at least one or two years of experience before coming, and to specialise early. He said a one-year course passes quickly, so you cannot start planning late.

Take internships, tutoring and volunteering to prove local experience. The Liverpool graduate did a paid one-month internship through the university's Liverpool Interns scheme, then an unpaid five-month role through a connection. A computer science student tutors 16 hours a week at about 12.50 pounds an hour.
Employers asked the digital marketing graduate for local experience and proof of skills, so he treated unpaid work as a way to learn. The tutor role took an interview with behavioural questions, which the student said are tricky: put yourself in the interviewer's shoes. Visa restrictions meant the university limited the hours of a longer internship he was offered, so always check your work limits first.
How Do Career Services, Alumni and Networking Help?
They produced the offers students described. A Liverpool master's student attended networking events, met an alumnus, was pointed to the careers page, emailed HR and got an interview. A Coventry University London student handed his CV to an employer at a university career fair and was called for a part-time job.
The Liverpool student also said the university brand got his applications a second look. A law student at Liverpool said the university emails a weekly bulletin of internship openings. The Leeds student advised using every resource the university gives you, because the library, journals and career fairs are all there, but you must actually use them.

Students use Indeed, LinkedIn and their university's job platform, and some walk into shops and ask for HR. A Liverpool graduate described three hiring windows: January to May for corporate roles, September to October, and a seasonal round in December. Stadium match-day staffing, pubs and security work are common student jobs.
A Coventry University London student got event shifts at a London sports festival after a career fair. The Hertfordshire students said part-time jobs near campus are scarce because many students search at once, and that travelling to London can cost around 20 pounds a day. A student at Sheffield Hallam found his warehouse job only after calling around for five months.
What Do the UK Visa Rules Mean for Your Job Plan?
After your degree you can apply for the Graduate visa, which lasts 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 and costs 937 pounds plus the health surcharge. To stay longer you need a Skilled Worker visa, which needs a sponsoring employer, an eligible job and a minimum salary of 41,700 pounds or the going rate.
For a Skilled Worker visa, GOV.UK lists a general minimum salary of 41,700 pounds or the job's going rate, whichever is higher, with a lower minimum of 33,400 pounds in some cases. The job must also be on the eligible occupations list, and you need an employer to sponsor you. Check the occupation code and going rate for your job on GOV.UK before you accept an offer.

Keep applying, widen your search and consider other countries. The Hertfordshire students said to look beyond the UK because their general international business course covers many countries. An architecture student from LJMU heard from seniors that it can take hundreds of applications, and plans to try the Middle East if the UK does not work out.
Remember that a placement year is not guaranteed. Sheffield Hallam's own course page says its work experience fee is still charged if you do not secure a placement. Treat any placement route as a chance, not a promise, and keep your fallback plan ready.
