Australia has been rising on Indian students' shortlists for 2026. A coach on AdmitKard's Study Abroad with Piyush channel says the main draw is predictable rules and the longest post-study work, which he puts at up to five years. We checked that claim and the main rules against Home Affairs and Study Australia in October 2026.
- The Student visa (subclass 500) is listed from AUD 2,500, and students can work 48 hours a fortnight in session
- The Temporary Graduate visa usually lasts 2 to 3 years, plus 1 to 2 more years on a second regional stream
- The national minimum wage is AUD 26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026
- From 2 October 2026 most students must apply from outside Australia.
Is Australia Still a Good Choice for Indian Students in 2026?
It can be, if your course matches what the labour market needs. The government's 2026 planning level for new international students is 295,000, up from 270,000 in 2025, and Study Australia calls it a prioritisation system, not a cap. The coach says Australia rewards students who link their degree to jobs.
The coach lists predictability, industry-linked courses and strong student protection as reasons students choose Australia. Treat those as his view. Rules, fees and visa priority change often, so check Home Affairs before you commit.
Is the Five-Year Post-Study Work Claim True?
Only in the best case. Home Affairs lists the main Temporary Graduate visa as usually 2 to 3 years. A second stream for graduates of regional institutions adds 1 to 2 years, but needs two years of living in a designated regional area. Adding the two is how you reach five, and it is not guaranteed.
| Australia stay 2026 | Home Affairs says | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa fee | From AUD 2,500 | Concessions in limited cases |
| Graduate visa, first stream | Usually 2 to 3 years, from AUD 5,750 | Age 35 or under, in Australia, recent degree |
| Graduate visa, second stream | 1 to 2 years, from AUD 2,265 | Regional degree and two years living regionally |
| Student work hours | 48 hours a fortnight in session | Check your visa conditions |
What Do Work Rights and Costs Look Like in Australia?
Students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session. The national minimum wage is AUD 26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026, so a full allowance is about AUD 1,270 a fortnight before tax. The Student visa is listed from AUD 2,500, so budget for it early.
The Temporary Graduate visa carries its own fee, listed from AUD 5,750 for the main stream. Fees and wages are updated regularly, so use the Home Affairs visa pricing estimator and the Fair Work site for the current figures.
Can You Still Apply From Inside Australia?
Mostly no. From 2 October 2026, new rules for the Student visa mean most applicants must apply from outside Australia and be outside Australia when the visa is granted, unless exempt. Applications lodged before that date follow the earlier rules. Read the Home Affairs page for exceptions and family rules.
This affects students who planned to land on another visa and switch to a student visa from inside the country. Plan your intake and visa timeline from your home country, and keep your funds and course offer documents ready.
How Do You Choose a Course and City for Australia?
Start from the job, then pick the course and place. The coach advises checking Australia's skilled occupation and shortage lists, picking a university and location that fit those jobs, and avoiding generic programmes. He says regional locations can add post-study time, and he points to Brisbane's 2032 Olympics projects as a growth area.
These job-market views are the coach's, not official forecasts. Confirm current occupation lists on government sites and ask each university about graduate outcomes before you pay a deposit.
