Germany's new Digital Master Test, or dMAT, has confused many Indian master's applicants. A coach on AdmitKard's Study Abroad with Piyush channel explained it in July 2026. Since then the official pages have changed, so this guide checks the video against APS India and the test operator, g.a.s.t., as of 21 October 2026.

What Is the dMAT for Germany Master's Applicants?
The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test for master's applicants. It is added to the APS document process for selected Indian applicants. The test operator g.a.s.t. runs it, while APS India still verifies your documents. It does not replace APS verification or the formal recognition of your degree.
According to the g.a.s.t. page, the test has a core module measuring general cognitive and analytical skills in three subtests, and a general academic module. It tests how you apply reasoning, not memorised facts. The coach adds that the test is in English and taken at a licensed test centre.
Who Has to Take the dMAT?
Applicants whose previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, or business and management, and who apply for the summer semester 2027 intake or later. You are exempt if you registered on the APS portal or shipped documents before 29 June 2026, or already hold an APS certificate.
APS India says an updated list of affected fields will be announced soon, so check its page before you register. Do not assume your degree is outside the list because it sounds related. The coach says students on exchange or double-degree programmes and standalone science, law, medicine and pharmacy degrees are exempt, so confirm each case on the APS FAQ.

The first sitting was planned for 26 September 2026, with results on 12 October 2026, according to g.a.s.t. APS India's page, updated 15 October 2026, says the next dates will be in mid-January and mid-March, with registration opening soon. The fee is reported as 150 euros, so confirm it on the g.a.s.t. site.
The coach's video quotes the September dates, which are now in the past. Treat any date from a video or blog as provisional, and check d-mat.de and aps-india.de before you plan your intake. Missing a deadline could delay your intake by months.
How Is the dMAT Structured?
It has two modules. The core module has three subtests: figure sequences, mathematical equations and Latin squares. The general academic module asks questions about a real-world academic scenario. The coach says it takes about three and a half hours in English, with a break, and that you may not take notes.

Does a Low dMAT Score Block Your APS Certificate?
The coach says there is no minimum score and no pass or fail, and that a low score will not stop your APS certificate. The APS certificate cannot be issued until your dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked, and the result appears on the certificate. Read the APS FAQ for the exact wording.
The coach also says very few German universities use the score so far, naming a couple of programmes as examples. That may change, so check the admission page of each university you apply to. Do not treat a high score as a guarantee of admission.
How Should You Prepare for the dMAT?
Use the official preparation material and the explainer videos on the d-mat.de site, because the coach says third-party mock tests were not available. Practise figure sequences, equation puzzles and Latin squares without notes, and read academic scenarios for the second module. Register early, and check your university in the anabin database first.
