All figures are the current official rates, checked on GOV.UK and UKCISA on 29 October 2026.

Why Study in the UK for Indian Students?

⚡ Quick Answer

The UK offers one-year master's degrees, which cut tuition and living costs, world-ranked universities, and the Graduate visa to work after your degree. Indian degrees are widely accepted, including many three-year bachelor's degrees for master's entry. Large Indian communities in cities like London, Birmingham and Leicester also help students settle in.

The trade-off is cost and competition. Fees at top universities are high, and the graduate job market is competitive, as students in our interviews describe. Choose a course with clear job links, consider a placement year if your university offers one, and start building skills and experience from your first term.

Is an Indian Degree Valid in the UK?

⚡ Quick Answer

Yes. UK universities accept Indian school and university qualifications, and India and the UK signed an agreement in July 2022 on mutual recognition of academic qualifications. Many UK universities accept three-year Indian bachelor's degrees for one-year master's courses. Each university publishes its own entry requirements for Indian students, usually as a percentage or CGPA band.

Requirements vary by university and course, and top universities ask for higher grades. Check the country-specific page for India on each university's website. If your marksheet shows a CGPA, give it with its scale and your university's official conversion where one exists.

Which UK Universities Do Indian Students Choose?

⚡ Quick Answer

Indian students choose Russell Group universities such as Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle for reputation and research, and modern universities such as Coventry, Hertfordshire and Northampton for lower fees and practical courses. Look at course content, placement years, location and graduate outcomes rather than rankings alone.

Business and management, including the MBA, computer science and data science, engineering, finance and accounting, law, public health and project management are among the most popular choices. Many one-year master's courses also offer a placement year option, which adds paid work experience and can make graduate job applications stronger.

Pick a course for its content and job outcomes, not only its title. Compare modules, teaching style, placement options and the careers support each university offers. For regulated careers such as law or teaching in India, check how a UK qualification is recognised before you commit.

What English Test Do You Need to Study in the UK?

⚡ Quick Answer

Most universities accept IELTS Academic, and many also accept TOEFL, PTE or other tests. Some universities waive a test if you scored well in Class 12 English. For some visa routes and courses below degree level, you may need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI.

Many UK universities ask for an overall IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate courses and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate courses, with a minimum for each section, but requirements vary. If your university assesses your English itself, it confirms this on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, which the visa officer uses.

How Do You Apply to UK Universities From India?

⚡ Quick Answer

For undergraduate courses, apply through UCAS, choosing up to five courses with one personal statement. For master's courses, apply directly on each university's website, usually with a statement of purpose, references, transcripts and an English score. After you accept an offer and pay any deposit, the university issues your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

  • Shortlist courses and check India-specific entry requirements
  • Take IELTS or another accepted English test
  • Prepare your statement of purpose or UCAS personal statement and references
  • Apply through UCAS (undergraduate) or directly (master's)
  • Accept your offer, meet any conditions and pay the deposit
  • Receive your CAS and apply for your Student visa

What Documents Do You Need for a UK Student Visa?

⚡ Quick Answer

You need a valid passport, your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, proof of funds held for 28 days, and proof of English if required. Indian applicants also need a tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic, as India is on the GOV.UK list. Some science and engineering postgraduate courses also need an ATAS certificate.

Keep your academic documents ready, because the visa officer may check the qualifications listed on your CAS. If any document is not in English, include a certified translation. Make sure every name and date matches across your passport, CAS and bank statements.

How Do You Get a UK Student Visa?

⚡ Quick Answer

After you receive your CAS, apply online on GOV.UK, pay the 558 pound fee and the health surcharge, and prove your identity. GOV.UK says you can apply up to six months before your course starts and usually get a decision within three weeks from outside the UK. Successful applicants receive an eVisa.

The eVisa is an online record of your immigration status that you access through a UKVI account, rather than a physical card. Apply as soon as you have your CAS and funds, especially for September intakes, because demand peaks in July and August.

Can You Bring Your Family on a UK Student Visa?

⚡ Quick Answer

Usually not for a taught master's course. GOV.UK says that for postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, you can bring a partner or children only if the course is a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree, or if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than six months.

If you plan to bring family, check the rules before you choose a course. Dependants pay their own visa fee and health surcharge and must show their own living funds.

Which Scholarships Can Indian Students Get for the UK?

⚡ Quick Answer

The main options are Chevening, funded by the UK government, Commonwealth Scholarships, which need a Ministry of Education nomination, and GREAT Scholarships, which the British Council lists as 12 awards worth at least 10,000 pounds each for Indian students in 2026-27. Universities also offer their own merit scholarships, often given automatically at admission.

GOV.UK says Chevening applications for 2027-28 ran from 4 August to 6 October 2026, so the next round is expected to open in August 2027. Apply for university scholarships at the same time as your admission, because many have early deadlines.

Can You Work While Studying in the UK?

Yes. UKCISA says students on a degree-level course at a university can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term and full time in official vacations, as stated on their visa. The National Living Wage is 12.71 pounds an hour for workers aged 21 and over from April 2026, according to GOV.UK.

Part-time work depends on the local economy. In our interviews, Sheffield students found warehouse jobs easily, while some Cardiff and Nottingham students struggled at first. Do not rely on part-time work to cover tuition, and never work more hours than your visa allows.

What Are Your Options After Graduating in the UK?

⚡ Quick Answer

The Graduate visa lets you work in almost any job without a sponsor: two years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, or three years after a PhD. Many graduates then switch to a Skilled Worker visa with a licensed sponsor, which can lead to settlement.

Guides quoting GOV.UK put the general Skilled Worker salary minimum at 41,700 pounds a year and the new entrant rate at 33,400 pounds, so check whether a job offer meets the rules before you accept it. Start your job search in your first term, because 18 months passes quickly.

Is the UK Safe for Indian Students?

⚡ Quick Answer

The UK is generally safe for students, and universities offer support services, wellbeing teams and international student advisers. Register with a local GP when you arrive, since the health surcharge gives you access to the NHS. Save 999 for emergencies, use licensed taxis late at night, and keep copies of your documents.

Join your university's Indian society and student union in the first weeks, because they help with housing, part-time work and settling in. If you face problems with a landlord, employer or anything else, your university's student support team is the first place to ask.
