The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private university in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA. Established in 1861 in reaction to the increasing industrialization of the United States of America, MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory education in engineering and applied science.

The institute is conventionally known for its research and education in the physical sciences and engineering, but more lately in biology, linguistics, economics, and management as well. According to the QS World University Rankings 2018, MIT has been ranked the best university in the world.

Several other organizations have also regarded it as the best university in the world for several years. The institute has several academic affiliations like AAU, AICUM, AITU, APLU, COFHE, NAICU, URA, 568 GROUP and a few others.

As of October 2018, 25 Turing Award winners, 93 Nobel laureates and 8 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with MIT as faculty members, alumni or researchers. In addition to that,

  • 52 National Medal of Science recipients
  • 45 Rhodes Scholars
  • 38 MacArthur Fellows
  • 65 Marshall Scholars
  • 34 astronauts
  • 16 Chief Scientists

of the U.S. Air Force have been affiliated with MIT. The university also has a robust entrepreneurial culture and the amassed annual revenues of companies founded by MIT alumni ($1.9 trillion) would rank roughly as the tenth-largest economy in the world, in accordance with a report of 2014.

Undergraduate Courses offered by MIT USA

Coming to the four-year full-time undergraduate program, the institute maintains a balance between professional majors and those in the arts and sciences, and has been labeled “most selective” by even the U.S. News while admitting few transfer students. MIT deals with 44 undergraduate degrees across its five colleges.

In the 2010–2011 academic years, 1,161 Bachelor of Science degrees were granted, the only type of undergraduate degree MIT now awards. In the 2011 fall term, among students who had chosen a major, the School of Engineering was the most prevalent division, registering 63% of students in its 19-degree programs, followed by the

  • School of Science (29%)
  • School of Humanities
  • Arts, & Social Sciences (3.7%)
  • Sloan School of Management (3.3%)
  • the School of Architecture and Planning (2%).

The prime undergraduate degree programs were in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and physics and Mathematics.

All the undergraduate students are required to complete a central curriculum called the General Institute Requirements (GIRs). The Science Requirement, usually completed during freshman year as fundamentals for classes in science and engineering majors, comprises two semesters of calculus, two semesters of physics, one semester of chemistry, and one semester of biology.

There is a Laboratory Requirement, usually fulfilled by an appropriate class in a course major. The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Requirement consists of eight semesters of classes in the arts, and social sciences, humanities, as well as at least one semester from each division as well as the courses required for a designated concentration in a HASS division.

Under the Communication Requirement, two of the HASS classes, and two more of the classes taken in the elected major must be “communication-intensive”, including “substantial instruction and practice in oral presentation”.Finally, all students are essentially required to complete a swimming test and non-varsity athletes are also required to take four quarters of physical education lessons.

Exam scores required

The average GRE marks for MIT in engineering would be about 162 in the verbal section and 167 in the quantitative section. It is ordinarily recommended to have a quant score in the 90thpercentile for improving one’s chances of getting in. International students may also take the TOEFL or the IELTS exam.

Coming to SAT to be safe, one should aim for the 75th percentile, with an SAT and a 4.13 GPA or higher to be above average, This is only part of the challenge – after this, one will need to impress them beyond one’s academic scores, with the accomplishments and extracurricular activities.

The minimum score required in TOEFL Paper is 577 and for TOEFL iBT is 90 for MIT.
