Lund University

Lund University is a famous university in Sweden. The University is one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe. It also comes in the top 100 universities all over the world. Lund University is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when  a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. 

About the University

The University has got eight faculties with additional campuses in the cities of Malmo and Helsingborg, with about more than 40,000 students. The university provides 270 different programmes and 1300 freestanding courses. Well, that is simply huge. No wonder the university gets students from all over the world. Lund University has also got about 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries. It solely belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. In addition to the academic and research excellence of the University, it is also famous for its unique student life that includes the historic student nations offering social activities all year round.

Two of the major facilities for materials research are in Lund University. They are MAX IV, which is a synchrotron radiation laboratory. The lab was inaugurated in June, 2016. The second is European Spallation Source, which is a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than the existing facilities today. it is expected to be opened in 2023.

The charming city is cute and compact and just forty minutes from Copenhagen. In the city of Lund, thousand years of history is blended with the country’s youngest population, global companies and also world-class research facilities.

Programmes offered by the University

The University offers over 100 master’s programmes, 9 bachelor’s programmes and almost 1000 stand-alone courses taught in English. As a comprehensive University, they can offer education in a very wide range of subject areas, as well as several unique interdisciplinary programmes. 

Lund University is divided into eight faculties as it was mentioned before. The eight faculties includes the Faculty of Engineering, School of Economics and Management, Faculty of Performing Arts, Faculty of Medicine, Faculties of Humanities and Theology, Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. 

Campus

The facilities are mainly located in the small city of Lund in Scania. The huge population of the students and the staff makes an impact on the city, effectively making it a university town. The University buildings are all scattered over the town. Most of the buildings covers an area of one kilometre square. There are a minimum of hundred such buildings in the city. 

The University also has a satellite campus in nearby Malbo, Sweden’s third largest city. The campus Helsingborg is located in the city of Helsingborg as the name suggests it, almost fifty kilometres from the city of Lund. Nearly about more than 3000 students are based on the campus. The Service and Management Department and the Department of Communication and Media are among those located at the campus in Helsingborg.   

Library

The library of the university was established in 1668 at the same time as the university. The library is one of Sweden’s oldest and the largest libraries. Since the year 1698, it has received legal deposit copies of everything printed in the country. At the moment only six Swedish libraries receive legal deposit copies, but only Lund University and the Royal Library in Stockholm are required to keep everything for posterity. 

The library also serves 620,000 loans per year and the staff is 200 full-time equivalents, and the 33 branch libraries house 2600 reading room desks. The current main building which is located at Helgonabacken opened at 1907. 

Hospital

The education and research in the health sciences at the university is operated in cooperation with Skane University Hospital. The education for medical sciences takes place in the Biomedical Centre, next to the hospital in Lund. Well, other than that there are almost more than 100 faculty in the university.

Alumni Network

The University has had the privilege of educating several prime ministers, Nobel laureates, a president and a number of notable leaders in the society. The University’s Alumni Network has over 39,000 registered members around the world, so there are endless possibilities for expanding professional and social networks. The former researchers, employees and also the students have joined this network, which is a great resource for career development as well as keeping in touch with former friends and classmates. 

Extraordinary Life Of Students

The student life in the university is based on three central structures: the student nations, the academic society and the student unions. Before July, 2010 the students were required to enrol themselves in a student union, nation and academic society in order to receive grades at the university. But this is no longer compulsory, students may or may not enrol in these organizations if they wish.

Student Nations

The nations of Lund are a central part of the university’s history, initially serving as the residential colleges for students, organized by geographic origin. Now, currently the students may enrol themselves in any nation, although the nation still preserves their geographic names. 

Each nation has a student housing, but the accommodations in no way meets the demand. They are usually appointed according to a queue system. Each nation has at least one pub night per week, with a following night club. 

Academic Society

Professor Carl Adolph formed Akademiska Foreningen(The Academic Society) back in the year 1830. The academic society is also commonly known as AF. The goal of AF is to develop and cultivate the academic life, by bringing students and faculty from all the departments and student nations together in one organisation. Prince Oscar, who was the Sweden’s Chancellor of Education then, had donated 2000 Kronor to help found the society. 

Student Unions

This union represents the unions in various decision-making boards within the university and council the students regarding their rights, housing and career options. There are nine student unions, one for each faculty. And there is an additional union for the doctoral students. 

Placements

The university places a strong emphasis on the employability of the students. Lund University delivers programmes and courses in close interaction with both local and global businesses and organisations. Some of the well-known global companies with which the university cooperates is Sony Mobile, Ericsson, Tetra Pak, Gambro, Alfa Laval. For entrepreneurs, research groups and organisations the university provide venturelab, Ideon Science Park and Medicon Village. These offers them unique environment and enables them to integrate research and innovation with new business models.
