Engineering still remains the most sought after course in India. Students aspiring to pursue engineering and related courses, often debate whether B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) and B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) are different or the same.
The major difference lies in the fact that B.E. is knowledge oriented, focussing more on theoretical knowledge, while B.Tech is skill oriented, emphasizing more practical experience and application. Both the degrees are widely accepted by institutions all-over India, and the candidates pursuing either of the degrees can specialize in fields that are common to both the degrees. Whereas B.Tech focuses on core subjects from the first year, B.E. concentrates on theoretical knowledge that is applied to develop equipment and gadgets in the field of science and technology. However, the curriculum for both the courses is monitored by The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
Both the courses, B.E. and B.Tech are graduate level programs, done after class XII. Physics and Chemistry are compulsory subjects for both the courses. A candidate aspiring to pursue either of the course must have passed class XII with at least 50% marks. Also, for admission to these courses in certain institutions require the candidate to appear for specific entrance exams like JEE Mains, GUJCET, etc. The duration of both these courses is 4 years, i.e., 8 semesters.
B.E. is a knowledge based course, where theory is given a higher preference. Curriculum is designed in a way to deal with the theory and concepts of engineering science. Also, subjects like mathematics is also an important part of the curriculum and is taught in detail throughout the case. Industrial visits and internships are also an essential part, but not mandatory or compulsory for the students because of its theoretical approach. Students interested in manufacturing of hardware, are more suitable for B.E.
B.Tech is a skill oriented course, giving preference to practical knowledge. Students interested in exploring the practical fields and modification of hardware can pursue B.Tech. The curriculum to this course is updated frequently because it is a technology-oriented course. In B.Tech, mathematics is an important part of the curriculum, but only for the first two semesters. Industrial visits and Internships are also a compulsory part of the course to help students gain practical experience.
Scope for higher studies
B.E. graduates can opt for higher studies in courses like M.E., MBA and M.Sc. Whereas B.Tech graduates can pursue courses like MS degree, M.Tech or MBA. To pursue these courses, students will have to appear for and score high marks in specific entrance tests.
Both these degrees offer great career prospects to its graduates, in all the sectors. Graduates can opt for higher studies or apply for jobs in public, private or the government sector. B.Tech graduates can seek for jobs that focus on innovation and development of hardware, while B.E. graduates can opt for job prospects that focus on improving the efficiency of existing hardware.
