A passport is a license to travel to different countries and prove your nationality. It is an essential document that must be renewed and ready for travel if a student wishes to study overseas. Therefore, before securing admission to a foreign university, students must start applying for their passports as early as possible. A number of documents are required for successful processing during the application process, and it is quite easy to miss or leave out a document. Therefore, we have put together a list of the most all documents required:

Proof of Address

  • Recent service bills like water, power or electricity
  • Landline/Broadband/Cable bills
  • Personal Duty Evaluation Request
  • Picture ID Card issued by political decision committee
  • The endorsement was given by the company manager
  • Aadhar Card
  • Tenant Report
  • Identity proof of parent’s in case of minors

Proof of Date of Birth 

  • Birth Certificate
  • School leaving Declaration/certificate

Other Documents that may be required

  • Photocopy of passbook of a bank account from a recognized bank
  • Voter ID

  • Spouse’s Passport Copy

If the applicant is minor, then there might be a requirement for the following documents:

  • Student ID Card
  • Bonafide Certificate issued by the School
  • Original and Self-attested copies of the passports of the parents
  • 10th Standard Mark sheet

Documents required for Passprt renewal

Every passport is issued for a particular period of time, after which the passport has to be re-issued or renewed. This process is separate and requires a different set of documents apart from the ones mentioned above. In India, the validity of a passport is for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors below the age of 18. 

Here is a list of documents that are required for passport renewal: 

  • Original of the old and expired passport
  • Self-attested copy of the first and last page of old passport
  • Self-attested copy of the Emigration Check Required(ECR)/Non-ECR page
  • Self-attested copy of the validity extension page (if any was requested)
  • A self-attested copy of the page of observation, if any, was issued by the Passport Issuing Authority
  • A No-Objection Certificate(NOC) (or) Prior Intimation Letter (PI)

It is important to remember that all original documents submitted at the counter during the passport renewal appointment will be returned to you. Therefore, it is advised that you always collect the originals from the counter after they are verified to ensure that they do not get misplaced.   

Documents Required for Indian Passport

As mentioned earlier, applicants who wish to apply for a fresh passport in India will be required to submit several documents along with the application. These documents can be broadly divided into 4 categories: Proof of Address, Proof of Age, Proof of Date of Birth, and Proof of Present residential address.

For Adults, Proof of Address and Proof of Age become the most important categories. They include: 

  • Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page of the passport that includes the details of the family and mentions applicants name as the spouse of the passport holder)
  • Aadhaar card
  • Proof of gas connection
  • Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Corporation
  • Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
  • Income Tax assessment order
  • Electricity bill
  • Rent agreement
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
  • Driving license
  • Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letterhead.
  • PAN card
  • A voter ID card
  • School leaving certificate
  • Landline or postpaid mobile bill

Proof of Address (Proof of Residencial Address in case of minors):

  • Mobile Bill (Postpaid)
  • Copy of the water bill, electricity bill, house bill, etc.
  • Copy of Spouse/Family member’s passports
  • Income Tax assessment order
  • Certificate of Verification, authorization, and endorsement from a company’s manager
  • Landline/Broadband bill
  • Electoral Voter ID
  • Proof of tenents
  • Rent Agreement documents
  • Photocopy of a passbook of a current account in a private, public, or regional bank that is recognized
  • Proof of Gas Connection

Proof of Date of Birth (Proof of Age in the case of minors):

  • School leaving Certificate
  • Secondary School leaving Certificate
  • In the case of orphans, a Declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on the official letterhead confirming the applicant’s date of birth becomes necessary.
  • Driving License
  • Aadhar Card
  • Public or Private Life insurance policy bonds can also be used if the documents contain the applicant’s date of birth.
  • PAN Card
  • The Registrar of Births and Deaths, the Municipal Corporation, or any other designated entity competent by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, can issue a birth certificate.

Documents Required for Passport Application

Apart from these documents, the application process dictates the applicant to go through several document verification stages and get green light approval from an official from the Passport Issuing Authority of India. The application form and the supporting identification document structure can be found on the official website. Once the appointment has been confirmed and the fees have been paid, the application will proceed for processing. This can take 20-30 days, and after this period, the new passport should be delivered. 

Here is a list of the pointers to keep in mind while applying for the passport:

  • Make sure you have collected all the documents required.
  • Have ample amount of duplicate copies of the required documents
  • After going through the application, schedule an appointment for document verification.
  • Visit the allotted Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), according to your appointment.
  • Present all the required documents to the officers present there. 
  • Self-attest every duplicate copy submitted to the officer.
  • Collect the originals and the affirmation receipt from the counter
  • Keep track of your passport status by checking through the web portal.

Documents Required for Passport Online Application

For those who do not have a passport application office near their place of residence or wish to avoid the crowd at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), there are alternative options available to proceed with the passport application process. One such mode is by submitting an online application for a fresh passport or passport renewal. We have made a list of the documents required for the online application process for getting a passport which can be used as a point of reference.

  • The first step of the online application process is to register oneself on the online passport Seva portal.
  • After registering on the portal, log in to the website
  • Applicants must then opt for either a fresh passport issue or passport renewal.
  • A form will open up and ask the user to input various details.
  • After the required details are provided, they must pay and schedule their appointment.
  • Online Payment can be made through Credit Card/Debit Card (Visa or MasterCard), Internet Banking(only SBI or associated banks).  
  • After the appointment is scheduled, all the required documents must be submitted.

Documents that must be carried to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK): 

  • Appointment letter
  • Proof of Date of Birth
  • Proof of Address
  • Identity Proof with photograph
  • Proof of Residence 
  • Proof of Nationality

There are various services available on the website, such as an online fee calculator, to estimate the cost of applying for a fresh passport or renewing a passport. However, it is important to remember that in the case of renewing a passport, passport renewal cannot be applied for a period of 1 or more years in advance. 

Documents Required for Passport for Students

Students who wish to study abroad in foreign universities will require to apply for a passport and student visa. Candidates will also be required to submit some additional documents apart from the standard set of documents. 

Here is a list of the documents required to be submitted for issuance of student passport: 

  • Print out the filled out passport application form that can be downloaded from the website
  • Proof of Address
  • Proof of Age
  • Proof of Identity
  • Certificates and Marksheets of School and college
  • Student ID card
  • Proof of admission to University abroad
  • Proof of fee payment

Apart from these documents, candidates must also pay a fee of INR 1,500 to avail new International IDs. This Payment has to be made through the online portal when scheduling the appointment, and details regarding the place of residence and bank balance may be required for procuring student visas to certain countries.

With colleges across the world opening up admission, it becomes a hectic process to apply for a student visa and passport. Therefore, it is always advisable to start applying as soon as possible to avoid last-minute rush and panic.

Documents Required for Passport in Tatkal

As explained throughout this article, a passport is a highly sensitive and important document. As such, one must always ensure that their passport is renewed and valid. However, emergency and urgent travel plans cannot be prevented, and in such cases, the standard passport application process can prove nerve-wracking and exhaustive. 

This gave rise to the Tatkal scheme, which enables the Passport Issuing Authority to dispense passports quickly and efficiently. Under the Tatkal application, one can get a new passport in a matter of days. However, passports applied through tatkal have a higher application processing fee for facilitating the swift issuance of passports. 

Fees to be paid for Passports under Tatkaal Scheme:

It is important to note here that the Tatkal scheme of passport issuance is not valid for candidates of Indian descent, changed nationality, minors, or personal credentials such as a signature.

Documents Required for Passport Change of Address

When you change your permanent address or any other details mentioned on your passport, it is necessary to apply for a new passport that has updated details to ensure that your passport remains valid. Different sets of documents are required for different changes in personal information, and we have listed them below:

How many address proof documents required for a passport?

Ans. In a passport, you require one address proof and date of birth proof. you need to take original documents along a self attested copy.

What are the documents required for passport renewal in India?

Ans. At the time of renewal of passport you require:
1. Original old Passport
2. Self-attested copies of the first two and last two pages of the passport.
3. Self-attested copy of the ECR/Non-ECR page.

Is Aadhaar enough for passport?

Ans. No! While Aadhar Card is an accepted form of proof of address, it is not sufficient to submit only the Aadhar card to avail a new passport. Apart from this, proof of age, nationality, identity, and birth must also be submitted. In specific cases, other relevant documents may also be required. 

Can I apply for passport without Aadhar card?

Ans. Aadhar card is listed as the mandatory document for applying for a passport by the ministry of external affairs. You won’t be able to get your passport without Aadhaar
