Study in NZ: Top 5 Engineering Colleges in New Zealand

The demand for the field of engineering is still going strong and currently, students have started preferring options in New Zealand also. With changing requirements, reputed technology and engineering colleges in New Zealand have been working hard on their curriculum and teaching methods to produce an elite class of engineering professionals. The growth of engineering and technology colleges in the nation has also risen in number. This post will be listing the top five engineering colleges in New Zealand which offer engineering and technology courses to aspiring students.

   University of Otago

The University of Otago is located outside the scenic land of Dunedin. This university manages a strength of 17,000 students, which also includes 2800 international students. The various campuses managed by this university are situated in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and Southland. The engineering courses are spread out into different branches. In the Times World University ranking of 2017-18, the University of Otago has been ranked 201.

Eligibility Criteria: A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or 95 in TOEFL (Post Graduation). A minimum score of  6.0 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL (Graduation).

   University of Canterbury


The University of Canterbury (UC) is New Zealand’s second oldest university,  established in 1873. UC has been awarded five stars by QC Wold University ranking for its facilities and research excellence. It is also ranked among world’s top three percent of Universities. UC offers program in a total of more than 150 disciplines and consists of more than 16,000 students (1,200 international students). While studying at UC, you will get chance to be a part of over 100 students clubs. It is interesting to know that, this university has distinguished alumni such as Nobel Prize-winner Ernest Rutherford, John Key (former New Zealand’s Prime Minister).

   Victoria University of Wellington

The Victoria University of Wellington was established in 1899, and is a fully government accredited university. Victoria University is renowned for offering engineering courses under a capable faculty. The University has a total student population of more than 21,000 with more than 3,000 students from 80 different countries. VU has many pre-degree programs, undergraduate degrees, along with postgraduate programmes and postgraduate certificates and diplomas.

Eligibility Criteria: A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or 90 in TOEFL (Post Graduation). A minimum score of  6.0 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL (Graduation).

   University of Waikato

The University of Waikato was inaugurated in 1964. It has close to 13,000 students out of which about 2,100 are international students. Waikato has a culturally mixed study environment. The famous alumni from this university include Warren Gatland (the head coach of the Welsh Rugby Union), Sam Knowles (former Chief Executive of Kiwibank) and Hekia Parata (former Minister of Education, New Zealand). The University of Waikato is only sixty minutes away from the surf resorts and the beautiful white sand beaches.
Eligibility Criteria: A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or 90 in TOEFL (Post Graduation). A minimum score of  6.0 in IELTS or 79 in TOEFL (Graduation).

  Auckland University of Technology

The Auckland University of Technology, or AUT, is known to be one of New Zealand’s youngest universities. It provides a large variety of courses in engineering and technology. It received University status in early 2000 and earlier it was known as the Auckland Institute of Technology. It also has a strong focus on research which makes it a classic option for pursuing a career in engineering.

Eligibility Criteria: A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or 90 in TOEFL (Post Graduation). A minimum score of  6.0 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL (Graduation).

The above mentioned five engineering colleges in New Zealand are known to be the best engineering colleges in New Zealand, which can be considered if you are planning to go abroad for studies.
