Here are a few essential facts you must keep in mind regarding studying in Europe.

  • In Europe, programs of study are organized by cycle. This follows the guidelines of the European Higher Education Area. The first cycle includes bachelor’s degrees, while the second cycle includes master’s degrees. The third cycle is for PhD programs.
  • EU and non-EU students have different application dates for studying in Europe. Non-EU students must start the application process at least a year in advance to ensure they meet all the deadlines.
  • It’s important to keep in mind that a Schengen Visa is only valid for 90 days. If your course of study exceeds this period, you will need a residence permit in the country you plan to study. Some European countries may require that you apply for a residence permit before arriving, so it’s important to check the specific requirements for your chosen destination.
  • In Europe, the cost of education is significantly subsidized, thanks to taxes. European students can benefit from very low or even no tuition fees. However, Non-EU students are required to pay the total tuition fees. Some provisions may relieve Non-EU students from paying the total fees or allow them to pay moderate to low fees.
  • In Europe, the workload for academic programs is measured and analyzed using the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) system. One school year in Europe is equivalent to 60 ECTS.
  • Typically, first-cycle programs (i.e. bachelor’s degrees) are worth 180-240 ECTS, while second-cycle programs (i.e. master’s degrees) are worth 60-120 ECTS. However, third-cycle programs (i.e. PhD degrees) do not have a specific ECTS range. The ECTS system makes it easier for students to understand and compare study programs across different European institutions and countries.
